Trijicon ACOG 4×32 riflescope in the TA01NSN M4A1 configuration. Etched amber crosshair BDC reticle for 5.56 and .223, illuminated by tritium alone rather than by fiber optics, so the reticle reads as a plain black crosshair in daylight and glows amber after dark. Description

Read this one carefully before you order, because it is not the ACOG most people picture. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Amber Crosshair is Trijicon TA01NSN, the M4A1 pattern 4×32, and it is lit by tritium alone. There is no fibre optic ribbon on top of the housing. That single difference changes how the sight behaves in daylight and is the reason it costs less than the TA31 models.

Tritium Only: What That Actually Means

On a TA31 or TA02, a fibre optic ribbon gathers ambient light and drives the reticle, so the aiming point glows brighter as the day gets brighter. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Amber Crosshair has none of that. In daylight the reticle is simply an etched black crosshair on glass, the same as the reticle in an ordinary riflescope, and it works exactly as well as any black reticle does against a lit target. Only when ambient light falls away does the tritium lamp become the dominant source and the crosshair reads amber.

That is a real trade and it deserves a straight answer rather than marketing. If you want a glowing aiming point in bright sun, this is the wrong model and you should buy a TA31. If you are content with a black crosshair by day and want a self powered amber reference at night, the tritium only illumination does that job for several hundred dollars less. Plenty of military rifles wore exactly this configuration for years.

Amber was chosen deliberately. It sits between red and green on the spectrum, retaining more night adaptation than green while reading warmer and more visible against dark foliage than red. On a tritium only sight, where total output is fixed and modest, that balance matters more than it does on a fibre fed reticle that can get genuinely bright.

Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Amber Crosshair Specifications

The optical package is otherwise the familiar ACOG: fixed 4x over a 32mm objective, 1.5 inches of eye relief, a 0.32 inch exit pupil and 36.8 feet of field of view at 100 yards across seven degrees. Housing is forged aluminium in matte black. Adjustments run two clicks per inch at 100 yards, which is half MOA in practice, and the TA51 flat top thumbscrew mount is included for an M4A1 pattern receiver.

Holdover stadia on the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Amber Crosshair are calibrated for 55 grain .223 and 5.56 from a 20 inch barrel. As with every bullet drop reticle, a 14.5 or 16 inch upper will shift the lower marks away from their printed ranges, so confirm them on paper with the ammunition you actually shoot rather than trusting the numbers etched on the glass.

Honest Notes on the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Amber Crosshair

The single most common disappointment with this model is someone expecting a glowing reticle in daylight and not getting one. It is worth repeating: by day this is a black crosshair. If you have handled a friend ACOG and liked how the reticle lit up, that was almost certainly a fibre fed TA31 and not this. Buy the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Amber Crosshair with clear eyes about what it does.

Tritium is a consumable with a half life of roughly twelve years, and on a tritium only sight that matters more than it does elsewhere. On a dual illuminated model a faded lamp still leaves you with a fibre fed reticle by day; here, a faded lamp means the night capability is simply diminished. Trijicon warrants the lamps for twelve years, which is an honest reflection of the physics. Check the date code carefully on any used example.

Eye relief is 1.5 inches with a tight eye box, as with every 4×32 ACOG. Anyone coming from a low power variable will spend a range session learning where their head needs to be. Mount position matters more here than on almost any other optic, so expect to move the TA51 once or twice before the sight picture comes naturally.

The upside is price and simplicity. This is several hundred dollars less than the fibre models, has one fewer thing on the housing to snag or foul, and needs no battery ever. For a rifle that lives in daylight and only occasionally sees the dark, that is a sensible set of trades rather than a compromise.
