Description

The TA31F is the civilian catalogue version of the sight the Marine Corps issued, and it is probably the most recognisable ACOG in the range. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Red Chevron BAC pairs a 4×32 prism with a red chevron bullet drop reticle for 5.56 and .223, and runs on fibre optics and tritium with no battery of any kind.

The Chevron Explained

A chevron is a triangle standing on its point, and each part of it has a job. The apex is the aiming reference: it is fine enough to hold on a small target at three hundred yards, finer than any dot and comparable to a crosshair intersection. The body widening below the apex is the shape your eye catches at speed, which is what a fine crosshair cannot give you. Below that sits the stack of holdover marks.

That geometry is why the chevron became the issued pattern rather than a specialist option. It does close work acceptably and distance work well, which is what a general purpose rifle sight has to do. Shooters who want maximum speed inside twenty five yards are better off with a horseshoe or a donut; shooters doing deliberate precision work past three hundred often prefer the plain crosshair. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Red Chevron BAC sits between them on purpose.

Red rather than green matters more than people assume. Red preserves your dark adaptation between shots, so if you shoot at dusk or at night and want your eyes to recover, red is the choice. Green reads brighter to the human eye at equal output and wins in full daylight. Trijicon builds the same scope both ways because neither answer suits everyone.

Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Red Chevron BAC Specifications

Illumination is the dual illuminated reticle system that defines the fibre and tritium ACOGs. A fibre optic ribbon along the top of the housing gathers ambient light and drives the reticle, so brightness scales automatically with the conditions and never washes out in sun or blooms in a dark bay. When the ambient light runs out, a sealed tritium lamp keeps the chevron visible. There is no battery compartment on the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Red Chevron BAC at all.

The body is the standard TA31: fixed 4x over a 32mm objective, 1.5 inches of eye relief, a 0.32 inch exit pupil, 36.8 feet of field of view at 100 yards across seven degrees. Forged aluminium housing in matte black, nitrogen filled and rated to 66 feet of submersion, with the TA51 flat top thumbscrew mount included in the box.

Honest Notes on the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Red Chevron BAC

The holdover marks are drawn for 55 grain ammunition from a 20 inch barrel, and most people reading this are running a 16 inch. That does not make the reticle useless, but it does mean the lower stadia will not correspond exactly to the ranges printed against them. Shoot them on paper at two, three and four hundred yards with the load you actually use and write down what you find. This is true of every bullet drop reticle and it is the single most useful hour you can spend with a new one.

Eye relief of 1.5 inches is short and the eye box is tight. Anyone arriving from a low power variable will find the first session frustrating. What the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Red Chevron BAC gives back is repeatability rather than forgiveness: get the mount position right, build a consistent cheek weld, and the sight picture is identical every single time. Budget range time for that rather than expecting it to be intuitive.

Reticle brightness is automatic and cannot be dialled by hand. Standing in a dark room looking out at a bright doorway, the fibre reads the room rather than the scene and the chevron can be dimmer than you want. If manual control matters to you, the battery illuminated LED ACOGs solve exactly that problem.

Finally, be honest about the competition. A modern one to six or one to eight power variable gives you a true 1x and more reach for similar money, and a micro red dot weighs a third as much. What neither offers is a sealed prism with decades of hard service behind it, a reticle etched into the glass, and nothing to fail when a battery runs out.
