Description

The Weatherby 307 Hush 7mm Rem Mag is the HUSH Edition chambered for the cartridge that has quietly been the sensible western magnum for sixty years. It runs a 24 inch fluted magnum sporter barrel with a 2 inch brake, a hydrodipped HUSH Tundra camo stock with adjustable comb and length of pull, and a PEAK 44 Picatinny rail with a forend ARCA adapter fitted from the factory. Capacity is five rounds and the UPC is 747115460618. MAG5 Firearms lists it for elk and open country hunters.

Why 7mm Remington Magnum Still Makes Sense

7mm Remington Magnum sits in a sweet spot that newer cartridges keep trying to occupy. It throws high ballistic coefficient 7 millimeter bullets fast enough to shoot flat and hit hard on elk, it recoils noticeably less than a 300 magnum doing similar work, and you can buy it in any gun shop in the country. As a 7mm remington magnum rifle this build gives you that with a modern action and a factory tripod setup.

The setup is what distinguishes a Weatherby 307 Hush 7mm Rem Mag from a plain hunting rifle. A PEAK 44 Picatinny rail is on the receiver and a peak 44 arca rail adapter is on the forend, so a tripod clamp, ARCA bipod or sling attachment mounts without a separate purchase. For hunters who glass from a tripod and then shoot from the same tripod, a Weatherby 307 Hush 7mm Rem Mag removes an entire step.

Underneath is the Weatherby Model 307: a two lug, fully cylindrical action with an M16 style extractor, tool-less bolt disassembly for field cleaning, and Remington 700 compatibility across stocks, triggers, rails, mounts and magazines. The fluted barrel bolt action layout trims weight and adds cooling surface without giving up stiffness, and the metalwork is Graphite Black Cerakote throughout.

Recoil, Ammunition and Honest Notes

Recoil with the brake fitted is mild for a magnum, and that is genuinely the argument for 7mm Remington Magnum over a 300. You get elk capable energy and a flat trajectory without the punishment that makes people flinch. The brake is loud, though, so hearing protection every time and a warning to whoever is beside you. The thread is 1/2-28 if you want a thread protector instead, and a Weatherby 307 Hush 7mm Rem Mag is still perfectly shootable without the brake.

Ammunition is a strength here rather than a constraint. Every major loader makes 7mm Remington Magnum in bullet weights from 139 to 175 grains, it is stocked almost everywhere, and prices are reasonable for a magnum. That is a real advantage over proprietary cartridges when you are hunting far from home and your ammunition does not arrive with your luggage.

Barrel life on any hard used magnum is finite and fluting does not change that. Confirm zero in two or three shot groups with real cooling time, build a drop chart the same way, and leave volume practice to a cheaper rifle. Most hunters will never wear one out, but anyone planning heavy range sessions with a Weatherby 307 Hush 7mm Rem Mag should know the throat wears faster than it would on a 30-06.

Who Should Buy It

A Weatherby 307 Hush 7mm Rem Mag suits the elk, mule deer and open country hunter who wants magnum reach without magnum recoil, ammunition available anywhere, and a rifle already set up for tripod work. If you are choosing one western rifle and you are not committed to a 30 caliber, this is a very strong candidate. Full factory specifications are published by Weatherby.

If you want more bullet weight for moose and big bears, the 300 Winchester Magnum version is the step up. If most of your hunting is deer inside 300 yards and you want cheap practice, the 6.5 Creedmoor version will serve you better and cost far less to shoot. Browse the rest of our rifles to compare.

Practical notes. Fit a scope with good eye relief, because a braked magnum still moves under recoil. Choose a bonded or monolithic bullet for elk sized game rather than a thin jacketed target bullet. And use the adjustable comb: set eye height to the scope before zeroing, because a Weatherby 307 Hush 7mm Rem Mag set up properly is far easier to shoot consistently than one fought for years.
