Description

The Weatherby 307 Hush 257 WBY is the HUSH Edition of the Model 307, developed with the HUSH crew and aimed squarely at hunters who fill a freezer every year rather than collectors. It runs a 24 inch fluted magnum sporter barrel with a 2 inch brake, a hydrodipped HUSH Tundra camo stock, and a PEAK 44 Picatinny rail with a forend ARCA and pic rail adapter fitted from the factory. Capacity is five rounds and the manufacturer part number is 3WRHS257WR6B, UPC 747115460571. MAG5 Firearms lists it for western and open country hunters.

What the HUSH Edition Adds

The base is the Weatherby Model 307: a two lug, fully cylindrical action with an M16 style extractor, tool-less bolt disassembly for field cleaning, and Remington 700 compatibility across stocks, triggers, rails, mounts and magazines. That last point is the quiet strength of the platform, because it means a Weatherby 307 Hush 257 WBY can be upgraded or repaired from the enormous 700 aftermarket rather than from one catalog, which matters over the life of a Weatherby 307 Hush 257 WBY.

The peak 44 arca rail setup is the practical upgrade. A Picatinny rail is fitted on the receiver for optics and the forend carries an ARCA and Picatinny adapter, so a tripod clamp, bipod or sling stud attachment mounts without buying a separate rail. For anyone who glasses from a tripod and then shoots from the same tripod, a Weatherby 307 Hush 257 WBY saves both money and fiddling in the field.

Cosmetics are not the point but they are done well. The hush tundra camo stock is a hydrodipped custom pattern rather than a sticker wrap, and the fluted barrel, receiver, bolt and bolt knob are all Graphite Black Cerakote. Fluting on a fluted barrel bolt action of this contour removes weight and adds surface area for cooling without giving up much stiffness, which is why it is used here rather than a thinner profile.

Cartridge, Recoil and Practical Notes

257 Weatherby Magnum has been the flattest shooting 25 caliber factory cartridge since 1944 and it still is. A 100 grain bullet leaves a 24 inch barrel above 3300 feet per second, which produces a trajectory flat enough that ranging errors cost you very little. As a 257 weatherby magnum rifle at around seven and a half pounds, the Weatherby 307 Hush 257 WBY is heavy enough to shoot comfortably while still carrying well.

Barrel life is the honest cost of the cartridge. A large powder charge behind a small bore erodes throats sooner than a 25-06 or a 6.5 Creedmoor, and heavy practice accelerates it. Confirm zero in two or three shot groups with cooling time, build a drop chart the same way, and treat a rebarrel as normal long term maintenance if you shoot a great deal. The fluting on a Weatherby 307 Hush 257 WBY helps with heat but does not change that.

The brake is effective and loud, which is the standard trade with any braked magnum. Hearing protection every time at the bench, and a warning to whoever is beside you. The muzzle thread is 1/2-28 if you want to swap the brake for a thread protector. Note that MAG5 Firearms does not stock or transfer suppressors, which require ATF approval and a federal tax stamp, so plan that separately if it is part of your setup.

Who Should Buy It

A Weatherby 307 Hush 257 WBY suits the hunter who glasses and shoots from a tripod, takes long shots at deer, antelope and sheep, and wants a rifle set up for that out of the box rather than after three accessory purchases. The ARCA forend alone saves most tripod shooters a hundred dollars and an afternoon. Full factory specifications are published by Weatherby.

If you want the same cartridge in a lighter rifle for long walks, the 307 Alpine CT in 257 Weatherby saves more than a pound with a carbon barrel and carbon stock. If you want a folding chassis for pack carry, look at the 307 Alpine MDT Carbon in 257. Browse the rest of our rifles to compare.

Practical notes. Choose a bullet built for the impact velocity a Weatherby 307 Hush 257 WBY generates, because a thin jacketed bullet at 3300 feet per second behaves badly on close shots. Buy rings that match the supplied PEAK 44 rail. And settle your load early, because 257 Weatherby ammunition is proprietary, priced accordingly and not stocked in every small town.
