Description

If you asked a room full of ACOG owners which reticle to buy for a general purpose carbine, this is the one most of them would name. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Horseshoe Dot 223 is Trijicon TA31H-G: a 4×32 prism with a green horseshoe dot reticle for 5.56 and .223, running on fibre optics and tritium with no batteries at all.

Horseshoe, Donut and Crosshair Compared

The horseshoe is an open bottomed ring with a dot in the middle, and the open bottom is the detail that separates it from the donut. A closed ring frames the target completely, which looks tidy but hides the bottom edge of whatever you are shooting at. Leaving the ring open means you can see the base of the target and the holdover stadia below it without the reticle getting in the way. At speed you use the ring, and for anything deliberate you use the centre dot.

Set against the crosshair version, the trade is the familiar one. A crosshair gives a finer aiming reference and is the better choice if most of your shooting happens past two hundred yards. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Horseshoe Dot 223 gives up a little of that precision in exchange for being much quicker to find inside twenty five yards. For a carbine that has to work at both ends of the range, the horseshoe dot is the reasonable middle.

Illumination is the standard Trijicon dual illuminated reticle arrangement. A fibre optic ribbon along the top of the housing collects ambient light and feeds the reticle, brightening automatically as conditions brighten, and a sealed tritium lamp keeps the horseshoe visible once the light has gone. There is no battery, no switch and nothing to check before you leave.

Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Horseshoe Dot 223 Specifications

The holdover stadia below the horseshoe are calibrated for 55 grain .223 and 5.56 from a 20 inch barrel, running out to six hundred yards. Run a 14.5 or 16 inch upper, or feed it heavier bullets, and the lower marks will drift from the printed ranges. Confirm them on paper rather than trusting the numbers, which is true of every bullet drop reticle ever made.

Physically the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Horseshoe Dot 223 is the standard TA31 body: fixed 4x over a 32mm objective, 1.5 inches of eye relief, a 0.32 inch exit pupil, 36.8 feet of field of view at 100 yards across seven degrees. Forged aluminium housing in matte black, nitrogen filled and rated to 66 feet of submersion, with the TA51 flat top thumbscrew mount supplied in the box.

Honest Notes on the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Horseshoe Dot 223

Eye relief of 1.5 inches is the thing everybody has to adapt to. The eye box is tight and unforgiving, and anyone arriving from a low power variable will spend the first range session hunting for the sight picture rather than shooting. It is worth saying plainly because people buy an ACOG on reputation and then wonder what they have done wrong. Nothing is wrong; it simply demands a repeatable cheek weld, and once you have built one the sight picture is identical every time.

You cannot dim the reticle. Automatic brightness is usually an advantage and occasionally works against you: standing in a dark room looking out through a bright doorway, the fibre is reading the dim room rather than the bright scene, and the horseshoe can be fainter than you would like. The battery illuminated LED ACOGs exist for shooters who want manual control of exactly that.

The market has moved and it is fair to acknowledge it. A modern one to six or one to eight power variable gives you a true 1x and more reach for similar money, and a micro red dot weighs a third as much. What neither gives you is a sealed prism with two decades of service behind it and an etched reticle that still works with no power at all. Buy the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 Horseshoe Dot 223 because you want that, not because it wins a spec sheet comparison.

One practical note on mounting. The TA51 is a thumbscrew flat top adapter rather than a quick detach lever, so if you move optics between rifles regularly, budget for an aftermarket lever mount. It also sits fairly low, so on a stock with a tall comb a riser can make the difference between a comfortable position and craning your neck.
