Description

Read the mount line before you order this one. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 BAC Green Donut is Trijicon TA31-G, and it ships on the M16 and AR15 carry handle base rather than the flat top mount most people expect. If your rifle has a fixed carry handle, this is the version you want. If it has a flat top receiver, you will need a TA51 adapter as well.

The Donut Reticle on the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 BAC Green Donut

The donut is the fast end of the ACOG reticle range. Instead of a fine crosshair you get a glowing ring with a centre aiming point, and the ring is what your eye finds at speed. Up close you put the donut on the target and press; at distance you use the centre and the holdover stadia below it. Shooters who want one optic for a carbine that works at both bad breath range and four hundred yards usually end up on a donut or a horseshoe rather than a crosshair.

Illumination is the standard Trijicon dual illuminated reticle arrangement. A fibre optic ribbon along the top of the housing gathers ambient light and feeds the donut, scaling brightness automatically with the conditions, and a sealed tritium lamp keeps it visible once the light has gone. There is no battery, no switch and nothing to check before you go out.

The donut BDC reticle is calibrated for 55 grain .223 and 5.56 from a 20 inch barrel. Run a 14.5 or 16 inch upper and the lower holdovers will sit slightly off the printed ranges, so confirm them on paper. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 BAC Green Donut is a 4x fixed scope, so the reticle subtensions do not change with magnification, which is one fewer thing to think about.

Trijicon ACOG 4×32 BAC Green Donut Specifications

Eye relief is 1.5 inches, exit pupil 0.32 inches, and field of view is 36.8 feet at 100 yards. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 BAC Green Donut housing is forged aluminium in matte black and rated to 66 feet of submersion. The carry handle base is machined as part of the package rather than bolted on, which is why this variant costs slightly less than the flat top versions.

Zeroing is worth doing properly and it is where most people lose accuracy that the glass could have given them. Set the rifle up solid, shoot a five round group at one hundred yards rather than three, and adjust from the centre of the group instead of from the last hole. Confirm the holdover marks on paper at two hundred and three hundred before trusting them in the field, because barrel length, bullet weight and muzzle velocity all shift where those lower stadia actually land. Write your confirmed dope on a strip of tape inside the handguard. It takes an afternoon and it turns a set of printed marks into numbers you can rely on under pressure.

Honest Notes on the Trijicon ACOG 4×32 BAC Green Donut

The carry handle base is the biggest practical consideration and it cuts both ways. On an A2 style rifle with a fixed handle it mounts cleanly and puts the optic at a sensible height. On a flat top receiver it needs a TA51 thumbscrew adapter, which is an extra purchase and an extra 89 dollars at Trijicon retail. Work out which receiver you have before ordering rather than after.

Eye relief of 1.5 inches is short and the eye box is tight. Everyone coming off a low power variable finds this frustrating for the first session. The Trijicon ACOG 4×32 BAC Green Donut rewards a repeatable cheek weld and punishes a lazy one, and mount position matters more here than on almost any other optic you will fit.

Two smaller points. Dual illumination is automatic, so you cannot dim the donut manually, and standing in a dark room looking out at bright daylight the reticle can read dimmer than you would like. And the tritium is a consumable that loses roughly half its brightness every twelve years, so a very old second hand ACOG will not perform after dark the way a new one does.
