Taylors Smoke Wagon 357 Magnum Revolver Overview

Taylor’s designed the Smoke Wagon as a second-generation take on the 1873 Single Action Army for people who actually shoot their revolvers. The two big changes are a low-profile hammer spur that is easier to thumb when shooting fast, and a slimmer grip that fills smaller hands without the bulk of a standard Colt-pattern grip. Taylor’s lists a 1-in-18.75 right-hand twist, a fixed blade front sight with a notch in the frame for the rear, an overall length of 11.1 inches and a weight of about 2.5 pounds. The hammer-mounted firing pin is retractable.

357 Magnum and 38 Special

The cylinder is chambered for 357 Magnum, and it also fires 38 Special, which is cheaper, milder and easier to find. Most owners practice with 38 Special and save full-power 357 loads for the field. Clean the chambers after a 38 session, since the shorter case leaves a carbon ring that can make 357 cases hard to seat or extract.

Built for Cowboy Action

The low hammer and thin grip came out of the cowboy action shooting community, where shooters work single actions against the clock. A 5.5 inch barrel gives a longer sight radius and a little more weight up front than a 4.75 inch gun, which helps steady the muzzle during fast follow-up shots. Taylor’s offers its own action tuning service for competitors who want a lighter, smoother hammer.

How a Single Action Works

This is a traditional single action. You open the loading gate, load one chamber at a time while rotating the cylinder, and cock the hammer for every shot. Safe carry practice on a traditional single action is five rounds with the hammer down on an empty chamber unless the maker states otherwise. Read the manual and learn the loading sequence before your first range trip.

Fixed Sights and Point of Impact

The sights are a fixed blade front and a groove in the top strap. Fixed-sight revolvers are regulated for a certain bullet weight and speed, so your groups may print high or low with some loads. Try a few bullet weights before you decide whether the front blade needs filing or a different load suits the gun better.

Finish and Care

Color case hardening is a heat-treated surface pattern, not a coating, and it will fade with handling and solvents over the years. Wipe the frame with a light oil after shooting, avoid harsh cleaners on the case colors, and treat the walnut grip with care. Uberti parts are widely available if a spring or hand ever needs replacing.

State Laws and Ownership

Pennsylvania has no handgun roster, and a six-shot revolver is not affected by magazine-capacity limits anywhere. Several states and cities add permit-to-purchase, registration or waiting-period rules, and California requires the model to be on its handgun roster, so check your local rules and confirm the transfer with your receiving FFL before ordering.
