Description
The Taurus 856 Stainless Concealed Hammer is the pocket-carry configuration of the six-shot 38, built in matte stainless rather than black. Taurus catalogues it as 2-856029CH: barrel, cylinder and frame all in stainless steel, a 2-inch barrel, six rounds of 38 Special rated for +P, and a hammer shrouded inside the frame.
Two features combine here that usually come separately. Shrouding the hammer removes the part of a snub-nosed revolver that catches on a pocket lining, and stainless steel handles perspiration better than any finish applied over carbon steel. On a gun meant to live in a pocket against the body, both matter.
MAG5 Firearms has the Taurus 856 Stainless Concealed Hammer in stock. Handguns ship to a licensed FFL on a signed 4473, and we coordinate the transfer with your dealer.
Built for the pocket
- Nothing protrudes above the frame line, so the draw does not snag on a lining or a seam.
- The action is double action only, which means one trigger press to learn and no decision to make under pressure.
- The shrouded design keeps pocket lint and grit out of the works.
- Stainless throughout, so sweat does not start rust where you cannot see it.
- Six rounds, where most small-frame revolvers in this class hold five.

Steel, grip and safety
- Stainless barrel, cylinder and frame, which puts the weight above an alloy-framed revolver of the same size.
- That weight is the point: a steel snub turns a sharp recoil impulse into a push.
- Finger-grooved black rubber grip, sized for concealment rather than a full firing grip.
- Transfer bar safety blocks the firing pin mechanically until the trigger is fully pressed, so all six chambers can be loaded.
- Fixed sights with no adjustment screws to snag, which is correct on a gun carried loose.

Short barrels reward careful ammunition choice. Everything in 38 Special is loaded to the dimensional and pressure standards published by SAAMI, but a hollow point engineered to open at four-inch velocities often will not expand at two inches. A heavy wadcutter or a purpose-built short-barrel load is the more reliable answer. We stock Remington UMC 38 Special 158gr for practice and the Buffalo Bore 150gr wadcutter for carry.
The same revolver in matte black is the 856 Concealed Hammer, and the exposed-hammer 856 Stainless keeps the single-action option. For a lighter gun, the 856 Ultra Lite uses an aluminium frame. Browse our other revolvers too.
Why this 856 earns its place
- The Taurus 856 Stainless Concealed Hammer combines a snag-free profile with a steel frame, which is the right pairing for pocket carry.
- Six rounds instead of five, at no cost in size.
- Stainless tolerates being carried against the body in summer far better than a blued gun.
- Holsters, speed strips and speedloaders for the 856 are widely stocked.
- Taurus backs it with a limited lifetime repair policy that follows the firearm rather than the original buyer.
This is a carry gun for someone who wants the draw to be uneventful and the gun to survive being carried. The Taurus 856 Stainless Concealed Hammer suits a jacket pocket, a bag or a purse, where a hammer spur would find every seam. It is also a sound backup to a semi-automatic, since a revolver fails in different ways and a second gun that shares no failure modes is worth more than a spare magazine.
