Description

The Stevens 555 Sporting Compact 410 is a proper sporting clays over/under scaled down twice over: once for smaller-framed shooters and once again by chambering the smallest of the shotgun bores. It weighs five pounds, carries 26-inch ported barrels and an adjustable comb, and comes with five extended choke tubes.
The Lightest Way Into Clays
At five pounds this is about as light as a break-action shotgun gets, and in .410 the recoil is close to nothing. That combination is what makes it such an effective teaching gun: a new shooter can carry it comfortably around a sporting course and shoot a full round without developing the flinch that a heavy-recoiling gun creates. The 13.25-inch length of pull suits a shorter frame properly.
Stevens 555 Sporting Compact 410 Barrels and Rib
The 26-inch barrels are chrome lined and ported, with the ports pulling what little muzzle rise a .410 produces down further still. A ventilated rib runs the length with a mid-bead and a fiber optic front sight, which gives the same sight picture as a full-size target gun. Five extended choke tubes come in the box, Cylinder, Improved Cylinder, Modified, Improved Modified and Full.
An Adjustable Comb on a Compact Gun
The Turkish walnut stock is oiled and fitted with an adjustable cheek rest, which is unusual at this size and price. Eye height over the rib is the single most important fit dimension on a shotgun, and being able to set it rather than guess is the difference between a gun that shoots where the shooter looks and one that does not. The stock is ambidextrous, so it works from either shoulder.

Why .410 for Clays
Shooting .410 on a sporting course is genuinely harder than shooting 12 gauge, because the pattern is smaller and mistakes are less forgiving. That is precisely why experienced shooters enjoy it, and why it teaches a beginner good habits: you cannot cover a bad move with a wide pattern. Shells are light to carry, the gun is quiet by shotgun standards, and a full round costs a fraction of the fatigue.
Why Buyers Choose the Stevens 555 Sporting Compact 410
Compact sporting over/unders in .410 are a small category, and most of what exists in it costs a great deal more. Savage put ported chrome-lined barrels, an adjustable comb, an engraved aluminum receiver and five extended chokes on a five-pound gun at a price that makes sense for a first competition shotgun. It is also a genuinely pleasant gun for an experienced shooter to take to the club for a change of pace.
Who Should Buy It
This suits a youth or smaller-framed shooter starting clays, an instructor who wants a gun that will not intimidate a beginner, and the seasoned shooter looking for a sub-gauge challenge. Set the comb before your first round, start with Improved Cylinder and Modified tubes, and budget accordingly, since .410 target loads cost more per box than 12 gauge does.
