Springfield Prodigy Compact AOS Coyote double stack 1911 pistol

The Springfield Prodigy Compact AOS Coyote takes the double stack 1911 and shortens the slide and barrel to 4.25 inches. Overall length drops to 7.8 inches and weight to 32.5 ounces, and none of the capacity goes with it. Seventeen rounds flush, twenty in the extended magazine, and the same factory optic cut the full size gun gets.

Where The Three Quarters Of An Inch Goes

Cutting a 1911 from 5 inches to 4.25 changes three things. The gun is shorter to conceal and quicker to bring out of a holster, the sight radius shrinks slightly, and the slide has less mass so it cycles a bit faster. In 9mm none of those are dramatic, which is exactly why the Commander length has been popular for seventy years.

What you keep is more important. The double stack frame holds seventeen rounds flush, and both magazines ship in the box. The barrel is still a match grade bull barrel, forged stainless with a 1:16 twist, headspacing on the muzzle without a bushing. And the trigger is still a single action 1911 trigger, which remains the best factory trigger geometry available.

At 32.5 ounces this is only half an ounce lighter than the 5 inch version, because the frame is the same forged carbon steel. The gain here is length and balance rather than weight. If you want a meaningfully lighter gun you want a different platform; if you want a shorter, faster handling 1911 with full capacity, this is the one.

Optic Cut, Barrel And Finish

The slide is milled at the factory for the Agency Optics System, which uses interchangeable adapter plates instead of a single proprietary footprint. That means most carry and competition dots mount without a gunsmith and without a milling bill, and you can change optics later by swapping a plate rather than re cutting the slide. A cover plate ships installed so the pistol is complete out of the box.

A dot pays off more on a shorter gun than a longer one. The shorter sight radius costs a little precision with irons, and a red dot removes the front and rear alignment problem entirely, which puts the accuracy back and then some. The Agency Optics System sits the dot low enough that the irons underneath remain usable as a backup.

The match grade bull barrel is the accuracy story. A bull profile is thicker along its length and locks up on the muzzle end without a bushing, removing a fitted part from the equation and adding weight where it damps muzzle movement. Coyote Brown Cerakote H-250 covers slide and frame, which beyond looking different from a black pistol hides the holster wear that shows immediately on dark finishes, and adds corrosion resistance over the steel.

Why Buyers Choose The Springfield Prodigy Compact AOS Coyote

This is the version of the Prodigy that makes sense on a belt. Three quarters of an inch off the muzzle changes how the gun clears a holster and how much of it prints under a cover garment, and it does that without giving up a single round of capacity.

The single action trigger remains the reason to choose this platform over a striker fired pistol. A short, crisp break with a positive reset lets you shoot precisely at speed, and the double stack frame finally removes the capacity objection that dogged the 1911 for a century.

The factory optic cut removes a real expense. Aftermarket milling runs a couple hundred dollars plus weeks of downtime and cuts through the existing finish, while a factory cut is machined before the coating goes on. The interchangeable plate system also means the pistol is not locked to one optic footprint.

Honest limitations: at 32.5 ounces this is still a heavy pistol, and appendix carrying it all day takes a good belt and commitment. Double stack 1911 magazines cost considerably more than striker gun magazines. Holster options are narrower than for a Glock, though the Prodigy has been out long enough that the major kydex makers support it. And a fiber optic front gathers light rather than glowing, so it gives you nothing in a dark room.

Who Should Buy The Springfield Prodigy Compact AOS Coyote

This suits the shooter who wants the 1911 trigger and modern capacity in a package short enough to carry, and the competitor who prefers a Commander length slide for faster transitions. Range regulars, instructors and anyone planning to run a red dot will get the most out of it. Home defense works well, though a tritium front sight or a mounted dot is the right answer for low light. Buyers who want maximum sight radius and the flattest tracking should choose the 5 inch version, and anyone who needs a genuinely light carry gun should look at a polymer pistol instead.
