Springfield Prodigy Comp Coyote 5 Inch 9mm 1911 pistol

The Springfield Prodigy Comp Coyote 5 Inch is the full size compensated double stack 1911 wearing earth tone Cerakote, in the ten round configuration built for capacity restricted states. Everything that determines how the pistol shoots is identical to the standard version. Only the magazines are different.

Full Size, Compensated, Compliant

The five inch slide is what makes this the flattest shooting Prodigy. A longer slide has more mass out front to resist muzzle rise, a longer sight radius for iron sight work, and more distance for the port to do its job. Combined with a machined in compensator, the pistol tracks about as flat as a 9mm gets without a bolted on device.

Springfield cuts a port through the top of the slide and the barrel behind the muzzle. Gas that would otherwise vent straight forward is redirected upward, and that upward jet pushes the muzzle down against the rise recoil produces. Because the integral compensator uses parts the gun already had, overall length stays at 8.5 inches, there is no threaded muzzle and every holster cut for a standard 5 inch Prodigy still fits.

The ten round configuration is the honest way to serve capacity restricted buyers. The frame, slide, barrel and trigger are the same parts the full capacity version gets, and the pistol ships with low capacity magazines rather than blocked full size ones. Confirm what your own state allows before ordering additional magazines.

Barrel, Optic Cut And Finish

The match grade bull barrel is forged stainless with a black DLC finish and a 1:16 twist. A bull profile is thicker along its length and headspaces on the muzzle end without a bushing, which removes a fitted part from the accuracy chain and adds weight where it damps muzzle movement. DLC is harder and slicker than nitride, which helps around a compensator port where carbon collects fastest.

The slide is cut for the Agency Optics System, which uses interchangeable adapter plates rather than one proprietary footprint, so most competition and carry dots mount without a gunsmith and a future optic change is a plate swap. A cover plate ships installed so the pistol is complete out of the box. Behind the cut sit a tritium front sight and a plain black serrated rear, the correct pairing for a gun that might be used in poor light.

Coyote Brown Cerakote covers the slide, frame and grip panels over forged carbon steel. Beyond looking different from every black pistol on the rack, an earth tone finish hides the handling and holster wear that shows immediately on black, and Cerakote adds a layer of corrosion resistance over the steel. The recoil system is a two piece full length guide rod, standard for this barrel profile.

Why Buyers Choose The Springfield Prodigy Comp Coyote 5 Inch

The trigger is the reason to buy a 1911, and a capacity limit does not touch it. A short single action break with a positive reset lets you shoot precisely at speed in a way striker fired triggers make harder to match, and that advantage holds whether the magazine carries ten rounds or twenty.

The comp is genuinely useful and costs nothing in size. A threaded barrel with a screw on device adds length, demands a purpose built holster and shifts the balance forward. A port machined into existing parts adds none of that, so every rig cut for a standard 5 inch Prodigy still works.

The factory optic cut removes several hundred dollars and weeks of downtime. Aftermarket milling cuts through the existing finish, while a factory cut is machined before the Cerakote goes on. The interchangeable plate system also means the pistol is not locked to one optic footprint for its life.

The honest tradeoffs: a compensator puts more blast and flash out front, which is unpleasant indoors and at night, and the port collects carbon that needs regular attention. At roughly 33 ounces and 8.5 inches this is a range and competition pistol first and a carry gun a distant second. Double stack 1911 magazines are expensive and pattern specific, and low capacity spares can be harder to source.

Who Should Buy The Springfield Prodigy Comp Coyote 5 Inch

This is the right choice for a shooter in a capacity restricted state who wants a serious competition style 1911 rather than the cheapest compliant option, and who prefers a pistol that does not look like everything else in the case. Local match competitors, range regulars and anyone running a red dot will get the most from the comp and the bull barrel. Home defense works for shooters comfortable with the muzzle blast indoors. Buyers in states without capacity limits should choose the standard version, and concealed carry buyers should look at the Commander length or aluminum framed Prodigy Compact instead.
