Description

The Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 9mm is a double stack 1911 that holds twenty rounds, and this is the Gear Pac version, which arrives with a Viridian green dot already mounted and zeroed, four magazines and a range bag. It is a complete setup rather than a starting point.
Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 9mm Barrel, Slide and Frame
The barrel is 4.25 inches of forged stainless steel in a match grade bull profile, with a 1:16 twist and an 11 degree crown. A bull barrel locks up directly against the slide without a bushing, which removes a variable from the equation and is one of the main reasons this pistol groups the way it does.
The slide is forged carbon steel in Black Cerakote, cut for the Springfield AOS optic mounting system so plates for most common footprints drop straight in. The frame is forged carbon steel with a polymer grip module, and there is a Picatinny rail moulded into the dust cover.
Optic, Sights and Controls
A Viridian RFX11 green dot with a 3 MOA reticle comes mounted and zeroed from the factory. Green is easier for most eyes to pick up quickly than red, and having it fitted at the factory removes the mounting and zeroing job from the buyer entirely.
Underneath the optic are irons that co-witness through it, with a green fibre optic front and an adjustable serrated U-notch rear. If the dot fails you still have a usable sight picture without changing anything.
Controls are an extended ambidextrous thumb safety and a beavertail grip safety, which is the 1911 arrangement most shooters expect. The trigger is single action, which is the whole reason to buy a 1911 in the first place.

What a Double Stack 1911 Changes
A traditional 1911 in 9mm holds nine or ten rounds. This one holds twenty. The grip module is wider to make room for the magazine, but Springfield kept the circumference manageable and the 1911 grip angle and trigger geometry are unchanged.
That combination is why the double stack 1911 category has grown so quickly. You get the trigger that made the platform famous, a modern capacity, and an optic cut, without moving to a striker fired pistol.
Why Buyers Choose the Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 9mm
The Gear Pac is genuine value. A comparable optic runs several hundred dollars on its own, spare magazines for this platform are not cheap, and having the dot mounted and zeroed at the factory saves both money and a trip to a gunsmith.
The rest is the pistol itself. Springfield brought double stack 1911 pricing down to a level that had previously been custom shop territory, and the match grade bull barrel and forged steel construction are the reason people take it seriously.
Who Should Buy It
The Springfield 1911 DS Prodigy 9mm suits competitors in USPSA Limited Optics and Carry Optics, 1911 shooters who want modern capacity, and anyone buying a first serious optic equipped pistol who would rather not assemble the package themselves. It is a heavy pistol at 32.5 oz., and that weight is part of why it shoots flat.
