Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch – Superb Big Bore Revolver

Description

The Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch is The Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch is a short barrelled version of the fastest production revolver cartridge in the world, built on the enormous X-frame.

Chambered in 460 S and W Magnum, it also fires 454 Casull and 45 Colt without any modification, which gives you three cartridges spanning an extraordinary range of power in one cylinder. A three and a half inch barrel makes it something you can actually carry in the field rather than a bench gun, and the Performance Center build brings a HiViz fiber optic front sight, an adjustable rear and Hogue grips designed to spread out what this cartridge does to your hand.

Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch Three Cartridges And X Frame Build

The three cartridge capability is the most practical thing about the Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch. Full-power 460 S and W Magnum is a genuine large game cartridge. Step down to 454 Casull and you have something comparable to a hot 44 Magnum. Step down again to 45 Colt and you have a mild, cheap round you can practice with all afternoon. Being able to tune the gun by ammunition choice makes an extreme handgun far more usable than it sounds.

The X-frame is what allows it. This is the largest revolver frame Smith Wesson builds, sized to contain pressures that would destroy an ordinary handgun, and the weight that comes with it is doing useful work absorbing recoil rather than simply being heavy.

A three and a half inch barrel is short for this cartridge and that is deliberate. It makes the revolver carryable in a chest rig on a hunt or a hike, where a longer barrel becomes a burden. You lose velocity, which matters if you are hunting at distance and matters less if the gun is insurance against something large and close.

The HiViz fiber optic front sight picks up light quickly, which is what you want on a defensive field gun.

Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch Recoil, Blast And Honest Limits

There is no polite way to say this: full-power 460 S and W Magnum out of a three and a half inch barrel is brutal. The Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch produces recoil at the outer edge of what a person can control and a muzzle blast that is genuinely painful without hearing protection. Firing one indoors would be a serious event. Nobody shoots a box of full-power ammunition through this gun for fun.

The short barrel makes the blast worse, because there is very little distance for the powder to burn before the bullet leaves. A great deal of the cartridge potential goes into noise and flash rather than velocity, and if you want the ballistics the 460 is famous for you need a longer barrel.

The practical approach is the one owners actually use: practice with 45 Colt, which costs a fraction as much and recoils mildly, and carry or hunt with 460 or 454 depending on the job.

This is a heavy handgun. Carrying it requires a chest rig or a purpose built field holster and a willingness to bear the weight all day.

The short barrel trades velocity for portability, which is the right trade only if you actually carry it into the field.

Why Buyers Choose the Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch

Buy the Smith Wesson PC 460XVR 3.5 Inch if you need a handgun that will stop something very large at close range and you are willing to carry the weight and absorb the recoil. In grizzly country, on a hog hunt, or as backup for a guide, nothing in a shorter package delivers this much energy. The ability to load 45 Colt for practice makes it far more shootable than the headline cartridge suggests.

Skip it if you are recoil sensitive or new to handguns, because this is one of the most punishing production revolvers made. Skip it if you want the velocity the 460 is known for, since a three and a half inch barrel gives away a great deal of it. And skip it if you are not prepared to carry a heavy revolver in a purpose built rig.
