Description
The Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40 takes the M&P M2.0 and replaces the polymer frame with machined aluminum finished in tungsten gray Cerakote. That one change alters how the gun shoots more than any other upgrade on the pistol, and in 40 S&W — a cartridge with a reputation for snap — it is the change that matters most.

Why an Aluminum Frame Changes 40 S&W
Forty S&W earned its snappy reputation in light polymer guns, where there is not enough mass to absorb what the cartridge does. The Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40 adds several ounces of machined aluminum right where your hand is, and the result is a flatter-shooting 40 than most shooters have experienced. If you tried 40 in a polymer duty gun and disliked it, this is worth handling before you write the cartridge off.
The tungsten gray Cerakote is a hard finish over that aluminum, so it resists holster wear better than anodizing alone.
What Stays the Same as a Standard M2.0
Everything else is familiar M&P: the same M2.0 trigger with its tactile reset, the same aggressive grip texture, the same controls, the same takedown. Magazines are standard M&P40 items. That matters, because a metal-frame pistol from a boutique maker usually means proprietary parts and a long wait for anything. The Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40 does not have that problem.
Interchangeable backstraps are included, so grip circumference is adjustable despite the metal frame.
Parts commonality is the practical reason to pick the Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40 over a small-shop metal pistol: anything that fits an M2.0 largely fits this.
Optic Cut and Rail on the Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40
The slide is optic ready, so a red dot mounts on a plate without milling, and a full-length Picatinny rail takes a duty light directly. Sights are steel. For a gun that is heavy enough to be a range and competition pistol as much as a carry gun, having both mounting options is the right call.
The Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40 is a full-size pistol; it conceals under a jacket rather than a shirt.

Who the Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40 Is For
This suits the shooter who wants a metal-framed modern pistol without leaving the M&P ecosystem, and anyone who shoots enough that recoil management matters more than carry weight. It is a strong range and home-defense gun. Forty S&W also remains genuinely cheap on the used and surplus market, which is a quiet argument in its favor.
If you carry all day in light clothing, a polymer M2.0 is the more practical choice and costs less.
Competitors in production divisions also look at the Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40, since the added weight helps on transitions without any aftermarket work.
The 40 S&W Question
Forty is out of fashion, and that has more to do with department contracts moving to 9mm than with anything wrong with the cartridge. It hits harder than 9mm and holds fewer rounds. In a heavy gun like the Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40 the recoil argument largely disappears, which leaves capacity as the real trade.
Ammunition is widely available and often priced below 9mm at the moment, which was not true a decade ago.
For a shooter who already reloads or has 40 components on hand, the Smith Wesson MP M2.0 Metal 40 is an easy way to keep using them.
Magazines, Holsters and Optics
Standard M&P40 M2.0 magazines fit, in 10 and 15 round capacities depending on your state. Holsters cut for the M2.0 Metal are a narrower selection than for the polymer gun because the frame dimensions differ slightly — check that a maker lists the Metal specifically. For optics, confirm the plate pattern before ordering.
Buy at least two spare magazines; 40 magazines are not as commonly stocked as 9mm.
