Description
The Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber grip version is the Ultimate Carry J-frame set up for people who intend to shoot it. Same tritium front sight, same U-notch rear, same cylinder cut for speed strips as the G10 model — but with cushioned rubber grips that soak up considerably more recoil from a light 38 Special.

What Ultimate Carry Fixed on the Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber
J-frame revolvers were sold for decades with sights nobody could see and a rear notch milled into the topstrap. The Ultimate Carry series replaced both: a tritium front sight bright enough to find in poor light, and a real U-notch rear that frames it. The cylinder is also cut for speed strips, which are the only reload that actually fits in a pocket.
Those three changes turn a gun people carried but could not shoot into one they can do both with.
Everything else about the Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber is a standard J-frame, so holster and parts availability is as good as it gets.
Why Rubber Grips Change the Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber
A lightweight 38 Special snub with hard grips is unpleasant to practise with, and guns that are unpleasant to practise with do not get practised with. The cushioned rubber grips on the Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber absorb a meaningful amount of that, particularly with +P defensive loads.
The trade is bulk and grab. Rubber is thicker than G10 and it catches on cover garments during a draw. If deep concealment is your first priority, the G10 version is the one to buy.
Shooting a Light Snub Honestly
This is a small revolver with a short sight radius and a long double-action trigger. It is easy to carry and genuinely hard to shoot well, and the Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber grip option exists because the people who shoot theirs the most wanted something more forgiving.
Standard-pressure 38 Special for practice, +P for carry. Expect to work at it; five rounds means every one matters.

Who the Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber Version Is For
The carrier who plans to put real rounds through their carry gun rather than shooting it once a year. Also anyone recoil-sensitive, or shooting with hand or wrist issues, where the cushioning makes the difference between practising and not.
If you carry in a pocket every day in light clothing, the G10 version is slimmer and draws cleaner. We stock both and the price difference is small.
Instructors often keep a Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber for students, since the cushioning lets a new shooter finish a box without flinching.
Speed Strips and Reloads
The cylinder on the Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber is cut for speed strips, and that is the reload you should actually train. Speedloaders are faster in theory and useless in practice if they will not fit in the pocket you are carrying. Buy three strips and practise with them.
A pocket holster is mandatory, not optional — it covers the trigger and keeps the revolver oriented for the draw.
Ammunition and Practice
Standard-pressure 38 Special is inexpensive and mild enough for long sessions. Quality +P hollow points for carry, and put enough through the Smith Wesson 642 UC 38 Special Rubber to know where it hits and how it feels — +P in a gun this light is a different experience from standard.
Dry fire is where double-action skill actually gets built, and it costs nothing.
