Description

Smith Wesson 1854 45 Colt Stainless stainless lever action rifle with black synthetic stock

The Smith Wesson 1854 45 Colt Stainless is the working version of the 1854: matte stainless steel over a black synthetic stock, chambered in 45 Colt. Where the walnut models are built to be admired, this one is built to be left in a truck, carried in weather and not worried about.

Smith Wesson 1854 45 Colt Stainless Stainless and Synthetic

The receiver is forged 416 stainless and the barrel is 410 stainless, which is the reason to choose this configuration over the blued walnut versions. Stainless does not rust when a rifle gets rained on and put away damp, and a synthetic stock does not swell, warp or need its finish maintained. For a rifle that lives in a saddle scabbard, a boat or the back of a vehicle, those are the properties that matter.

The forend carries M-LOK slots with textured panels, so a light or a sling mount attaches directly without adapters. Traditional lever guns offer nowhere to hang anything; this one accepts the accessories people actually use.

45 Colt, Barrel and Sights

The 19.25 inch barrel has eight groove rifling with a 1:16 twist, which is the correct rate for the heavier bullets 45 Colt is usually loaded with. The muzzle is threaded 11/16×24 for a suppressor or brake. 45 Colt is a large, relatively slow bullet that is already subsonic in most loadings, which makes it an unusually good match for a suppressor.

The magazine tube holds nine rounds and is removable, so unloading does not require cycling live rounds through the action the way a traditional lever gun does. Sights are XS, with an adjustable ghost ring rear and a gold bead front, and a Picatinny rail is fitted for an optic. The single stage trigger adjusts to roughly four pounds six ounces.

Ammunition Notes

A word on 45 Colt loading levels, because the range is wider than most cartridges. Standard pressure ammunition is loaded conservatively to remain safe in the original 1873 revolvers still in circulation, and it is mild. Separately, some manufacturers offer heavy loads intended only for modern strong actions such as Ruger revolvers and lever guns. Those two categories are not interchangeable, and the heavy loads should never be fired in a vintage revolver.

The tube magazine also calls for flat or round nosed bullets rather than pointed ones, since cartridges sit nose to primer. Virtually all 45 Colt ammunition is already flat nosed, so this rarely restricts anything in practice.

Why Buyers Choose the Smith Wesson 1854 45 Colt Stainless

45 Colt in a rifle is a quietly excellent combination. The cartridge was designed in 1873 for black powder and remains a big, heavy, slow bullet, but from a 19 inch barrel with modern loads it becomes genuinely capable inside a hundred yards while staying pleasant to shoot. Recoil is a firm push rather than the sharp crack of a magnum.

The stainless and synthetic build is what makes this the practical choice of the family. Nothing about it needs protecting, so it gets used rather than kept.

Who Should Buy It

The Smith Wesson 1854 45 Colt Stainless suits the hunter or rancher who needs a rifle that tolerates weather and neglect, the suppressor owner looking for a naturally subsonic cartridge, and the shooter who already owns a 45 Colt revolver and wants to share ammunition.
