The M&P15-22 is not an AR-15 with a conversion kit in it. It is a purpose-built 22 LR rifle that copies the AR-15 layout, dimensions and controls, which means everything you learn on it transfers to a centerfire rifle while the ammunition costs a fraction as much.
Because it is designed around the rimfire cartridge rather than adapted to it, the rifle is light at roughly 4.8 pounds and it works reliably. Conversion kits in centerfire uppers are notoriously fussy; this is not one.
The controls sit exactly where an AR shooter expects them. Functioning charging handle, receiver-mounted safety lever, shell deflector, magazine release and bolt catch all operate the same way, and the 6-position CAR stock adjusts to fit shooters of any size.
Handguard, Sights and Barrel
A 10 inch M&P slim handguard carries the Magpul M-LOK system, so lights, bipods, hand stops and rail sections attach directly without removing the handguard. Smith and Wesson include a 2 inch M-LOK rail panel with the rifle.
Magpul MBUS folding sights are fitted front and rear. They are among the most widely used backup sights on the market, they fold flat when you add an optic, and they are removable if you want the rail clear.

The Threaded Muzzle
A threaded barrel on a 22 rifle is mostly about suppressors, and a suppressed rimfire rifle is the quietest firearm most people will ever shoot. With subsonic ammunition the loudest sound is often the bolt cycling, which makes it excellent for teaching, for pest control near buildings and for anyone whose range time is limited by noise.
Two things are worth knowing. Subsonic 22 LR carries the least energy of any loading, and some subsonic ammunition will not reliably cycle a semi-automatic action, so expect to test a few brands. And a suppressor pushes more fouling back into the action, so plan on cleaning more often than you would otherwise.
If a suppressor is not in your plans, the threads still take a compensator or simply wear the supplied thread protector, and the rifle loses nothing by having them.
