The Sig Sauer MCX Spear 6.8×51 is the civilian version of the rifle the US Army selected to replace the M4 in close combat units. What the Army Asked For and Got

The Next Generation Squad Weapon program wanted a rifle that could defeat modern body armor at distance, which meant a cartridge running at pressures conventional brass cases cannot survive. SIG answered with 6.8×51 on a hybrid case and built the rifle around it.

The Sig Sauer MCX Spear 6.8×51 is that rifle, offered commercially with a semi-automatic fire control. Nothing about the architecture is a downgrade from the issued gun except the trigger group.

The 6.8×51 Cartridge

The hybrid case pairs a stainless steel head with a brass body, which lets the round run at pressures that produce rifle velocities from a 16-inch barrel that would otherwise demand a much longer tube.

That translates into flatter trajectory and more retained energy than 5.56 at any distance, in a rifle that still weighs and handles like a carbine rather than a battle rifle.

A short-stroke gas piston keeps propellant gas and carbon forward at the gas block instead of venting them into the receiver. With a suppressor attached, that difference is the gap between a rifle that stays runnable and one that chokes on its own fouling.

An adjustable gas system lets the rifle be tuned for suppressed and unsuppressed use, which is not optional on a cartridge operating at these pressures.

Folding Stock and Ambidextrous Controls

The Magpul SL-M stock both folds and telescopes, so the rifle fits a shooter in a plate carrier, fits a shooter in shirtsleeves, and fits in a case that is shorter than the rifle.

Safety, magazine release, bolt catch and charging handle all work from either side. On a rifle built for fighting around cover, that is a functional requirement rather than a convenience.

Availability and Transfer

MAG5 Firearms is a licensed FFL dealer in Pennsylvania. This rifle ships new in the factory box with the magazine and SIG documentation, transferred through your local FFL.

Six-eight by fifty-one ammunition is produced by SIG and worth stocking when available, since distribution has not yet caught up with legacy cartridges.
