Description

Sellier Bellot 8x57 JRS 196gr SPCE rimmed soft point cut edge cartridge

The 8×57 is the cartridge that armed Germany through two wars and then spent a century as its standard hunting round. The Sellier Bellot 8×57 JRS 196gr SPCE is the rimmed version, made for the break-action rifles and drillings that dominate European sporting guns.

JRS, JS and Why the Letters Matter

The 8×57 family has the most confusing nomenclature of any common cartridge, and getting it wrong is genuinely dangerous. The letters do specific work: J means the original 1888 pattern with a 0.318 inch bullet, S means the 1905 update to a 0.323 inch bullet, and R means a rimmed case for break-action guns. So JS is rimless with the larger bullet, JRS is rimmed with the larger bullet, and plain J or JR is the older narrow bore.

Firing an S-diameter round in a J-bore rifle raises pressure sharply and is a recognised way to damage a gun and injure a shooter. Rifles built before 1905, and some sporters converted from them, may be J-bore. If you own an older German rifle and are not certain which it is, have it slugged by a gunsmith before you buy any 8×57 at all.

With that established, the Sellier Bellot 8×57 JRS 196gr SPCE is the rimmed S-bore load, and it belongs in break-action rifles, drillings and combination guns marked 8×57 JRS.

Sellier Bellot 8×57 JRS 196gr SPCE Specifications

Ballistically this is a woodland cartridge and makes no pretence otherwise. A 196 grain bullet at 726 metres per second, roughly 2382 feet per second, gives 3347 joules or about 2468 foot-pounds. That is 30-06 class energy delivered with a heavier, slower bullet, which is the European preference and is well suited to boar and red deer in cover.

SPCE stands for Soft Point Cut-through Edge. The jacket mouth is trimmed square rather than tapered, giving the lead a defined shoulder to peel back from so expansion begins predictably even at the moderate impact velocities this cartridge produces. The jacket thickens toward the base, so the rear stays intact and drives through.

Because drillings and break-action rifles are regulated at the factory with a specific load, point of impact with the Sellier Bellot 8×57 JRS 196gr SPCE may differ from whatever the gun was set up for. Confirm where it prints at your intended distance before hunting rather than assuming.

Honest Notes on the 8×57 Family

Buy the Sellier Bellot 8×57 JRS 196gr SPCE if your break-action rifle, drilling or combination gun is marked 8×57 JRS. This is the standard hunting load for it and one of few current factory sources in the United States.

Do not buy it for a bolt-action rifle. Those take the rimless 8×57 JS, and the rimmed case will not headspace correctly. Check the barrel marking, not the catalogue description.

Do not buy it at all if your rifle might be J-bore rather than S-bore. That is a 0.318 versus 0.323 inch difference and it is a pressure problem, not a fit problem. A gunsmith can settle it in minutes and it is worth the trip.

The rimless version for bolt actions: Sellier and Bellot 8×57 JS 196gr FMJ. Another rimmed European chambering: 7x65R 173gr SPCE. Sellier and Bellot publishes full SPCE ballistic data on its own site.

MAG5 Firearms stocks ammunition for European and obsolete chamberings. If you own an older German rifle and are unsure whether it is J or S bore, ask us before ordering anything.
