Description

Almost all 7.62x54R on the market is surplus-grade ball designed to feed a machine gun. The Sellier Bellot 7.62x54R 174gr HPBT Match is the exception: brass cased, boxer primed, and loaded to accuracy standards rather than volume standards.

Match Ammunition for a Surplus Cartridge
The 7.62x54R has been in continuous service since 1891, longer than any other cartridge still in military use, and the vast majority of what is available for it reflects that. Surplus and surplus-pattern ammunition is steel cased, Berdan primed, often corrosive, and loaded for reliable function rather than small groups. It is cheap and it is fine for what it is.
The Sellier Bellot 7.62x54R 174gr HPBT Match is a different proposition. Brass case, boxer primer, non-corrosive, and a 174 grain hollow point boat tail chosen for consistency rather than cost. At 2585 feet per second it produces roughly 2582 foot-pounds, which is standard for the cartridge; the difference is in how repeatable the load is from round to round.
Sellier and Bellot make this in Vlasim, Czech Republic. The hollow point here is a match design, formed by drawing the jacket base-forward so the most concentric material ends up at the nose. It is not an expanding hunting bullet.

Who this is for, practically: anyone shooting a Mosin Nagant M91/30, a PSL, an SVD-pattern rifle or a Finnish M39 who wants to see what the rifle can actually do. Surplus ammunition frequently masks a rifle accuracy, and shooters are often surprised what a good bore will produce with the Sellier Bellot 7.62x54R 174gr HPBT Match.
The boxer-primed brass matters more here than in most cartridges. Berdan-primed steel surplus is effectively non-reloadable, so for a handloader this is one of the few practical sources of 7.62x54R brass. Save every case.
Non-corrosive priming is worth stating plainly. Much surplus 7.62x54R uses corrosive primers, which demand the bore be cleaned with water or a water-based solvent the same day or the rifling will pit. This ammunition does not, so ordinary cleaning is sufficient.

Honest Notes on Shooting 7.62x54R
Buy the Sellier Bellot 7.62x54R 174gr HPBT Match if you want to find out how accurate your 7.62x54R rifle really is, or if you shoot a designated marksman pattern rifle where the ammunition is the limiting factor. It is also the sensible choice if you reload and need brass.
Skip it for plinking. Surplus-pattern steel-cased ball costs a fraction as much and is entirely adequate for putting rounds downrange, and there is no sense burning match ammunition on informal shooting.
Skip it for hunting. A match hollow point is not designed to expand and is the wrong bullet for game. The Sellier and Bellot 180 grain soft point in the same cartridge is the correct choice there.
For hunting in the same cartridge: Sellier and Bellot 7.62x54R 180gr SP. For volume practice, the 180gr FMJ. A rifle to shoot it in: the M91 Sniper 7.62x54R. Sellier and Bellot publishes its full rifle ammunition catalogue on its own site.
MAG5 Firearms stocks 7.62x54R from surplus-grade practice through brass-cased match. If you are trying to work out whether your rifle or your ammunition is the problem, ask us.
