What Less Lethal Actually Means
Less lethal is a description of intent and probability, not a guarantee. Sellier and Bellot describe this load as intended for shooting at live targets from a defined distance to cause trauma and stop an aggressor, and the operative phrase is defined distance. Fired too close, a rubber ball at 935 fps can break bone, rupture an eye or kill. Fired too far, it does nothing useful. The safe working envelope is narrow and you have to know it.
The two ball configuration spreads roughly 62 grains of rubber across two projectiles rather than concentrating it in one. That lowers the energy carried by any single impact compared with a single ball load of similar total weight, which is the reason multi projectile less lethal ammunition exists at all. It also means a wider impact area and less precision.
The hull is transparent plastic, which is deliberate and genuinely useful. Anyone loading a shotgun can see at a glance that the chamber holds less lethal ammunition rather than buckshot, and in the environments this ammunition is used in that visual check matters. It is a small design decision that prevents a serious mistake.

Honest Notes Before You Buy
A spec correction worth knowing: this shell is listed by many retailers, and in our own older title, as 2 3/4 inch. Sellier and Bellot specify 67.5 millimetres, which is closer to 2 5/8 inches. It chambers and functions in any 2 3/4 inch 12 gauge, but if you are checking magazine capacity or building a load plan, use the manufacturer figure rather than the retail listing.
This is not a home defence substitute and it should not be sold or bought as one. Every serious use of force instructor teaches the same thing: if the situation justifies pointing a shotgun at a person, it generally justifies a lethal response, and if it does not, you should not be pointing a shotgun at all. Less lethal ammunition exists for trained users with a specific mission, a backup lethal option and a legal framework behind them.
Legality varies and you need to check. Some states and municipalities restrict less lethal ammunition, and using it against a person carries the same legal exposure as any other use of force. Being able to say the round was rubber is not a defence in itself.
Function testing matters too. Sellier and Bellot 12ga Rubber Ball loads are low pressure by shotgun standards and will not reliably cycle a semi automatic action. Treat a gas gun as a single shot with these loaded, and expect to work the action manually. Pump guns generally handle them without complaint.
We also stock the single ball rubber load and rubber buckshot from the same family. Manufacturer data is published on the Sellier and Bellot product page.
