Description

The Savage 64 FXP 22 LR is a complete rifle package rather than a rifle, and that is the point. Model 40000 arrives with a 4×15 scope already mounted and boresighted on a 21 inch button-rifled barrel, a ten-round detachable magazine, iron sights underneath the glass, and a black synthetic stock with sling studs already fitted. It weighs 5 pounds and measures 40 inches.

For a first rifle there is very little to argue with. The Savage 64 FXP 22 LR is a straight blowback semi-automatic, which is the simplest repeating action there is: one moving group, no gas system, nothing to time. It strips with a screwdriver, it runs on whatever 22 Long Rifle is on the shelf, and it costs less than a decent optic on its own.

We will be straight about the scope, because a lot of listings are not. A 4×15 is a basic optic. It is genuinely useful at 25 to 50 yards, it is mounted and boresighted so the rifle shoots out of the box, and most owners eventually upgrade it. That is normal and it is not a criticism of the package.

Features of the Savage 64 FXP 22 LR

  • 21 inch carbon steel barrel, button rifled with a 1:16 twist, matte black
  • Ten-round detachable box magazine
  • Straight blowback semi-automatic action
  • 4×15 scope, mounted and boresighted at the factory, with rings included
  • Metal front and rear iron sights fitted underneath
  • Grooved receiver, so the scope can be changed without a gunsmith
  • Black synthetic sporter stock with a recoil pad and two quick-detach sling studs
  • 40 inches overall, 5 pounds

Why a straight blowback 22 rifle is the right first rifle

  • A straight blowback 22 rifle has no gas system and no locking lugs, so there is almost nothing to go wrong and almost nothing to learn before you can clean it
  • 22 Long Rifle is cheap enough that a beginner can shoot enough rounds to actually get good
  • At 5 pounds and with essentially no recoil, a young or small shooter is not fighting the rifle
  • Iron sights underneath the scope mean the rifle still works if the optic is knocked or fails
  • It is quiet enough that a backyard range or a small club bay is comfortable without hearing fatigue

What the 4×15 scope included actually does

The 4×15 scope included with this package is a fixed four-power optic with a 15mm objective. In plain terms: it magnifies four times and it gathers a modest amount of light. On a 22 rifle shooting at 25, 50 and occasionally 75 yards, that is enough magnification to see a squirrel clearly and to put a group on paper, and the fixed power means there is nothing to fiddle with.

What it will not do is perform in low light or hold up to hard knocks the way a 150 dollar scope will. If and when you outgrow it, the receiver is grooved, so swapping the optic is a five-minute job with a screwdriver rather than a trip to a gunsmith. In the meantime the iron sights are still there underneath.

The ten round detachable magazine and feeding

The ten round detachable magazine drops free and reloads like any box magazine, which is a real advantage over tube-fed 22 rifles when you are teaching someone: you can hand over a loaded magazine, watch them seat it, and take it back. Tube magazines have to be filled a round at a time with the muzzle pointed somewhere.

Blowback 22 semi-automatics are more particular about ammunition than bolt guns are, because the cartridge has to generate enough pressure to cycle the action. Standard velocity target loads sometimes short-stroke. Use 40 grain high velocity for reliability: Federal AutoMatch 40 grain is made specifically for semi-automatic 22s and we keep it deep, and Remington Golden Bullet 36 grain plated hollow point is the other classic. Avoid subsonic and target loads in this rifle unless you are happy cycling it by hand.

Where the Savage 64 FXP 22 LR sits against the alternatives

If you want a single shot for a very young beginner, the Crickett youth rifle forces one deliberate round at a time, which some parents prefer. If you would rather have the most supported 22 semi-automatic in existence and are prepared to buy your own optic, the Ruger 10/22 is the benchmark. The Winchester Wildcat SR is the modern take with a threaded barrel and a polymer chassis.

The Savage 64 FXP 22 LR beats all of them on one measure only, and it is the measure that matters to a first-time buyer: it is the cheapest way to leave the shop with a rifle that is ready to shoot. Background on the cartridge itself is collected on the .22 Long Rifle reference page.

Why this firearm earns its place

  • A complete package: rifle, scope, rings, magazine and sling studs, mounted and boresighted
  • Iron sights fitted underneath the scope, which most scoped packages leave off
  • Button-rifled 21 inch barrel, which is a real barrel rather than a hammer-forged afterthought
  • 5 pounds and no meaningful recoil, so a new or young shooter can concentrate on technique
  • Grooved receiver, so the starter scope can be upgraded later without any gunsmithing

This suits the parent or grandparent buying a first rifle, the household that wants one cheap plinker for the barn or the back field, and anyone who wants a 22 that is ready to shoot the day it arrives. It is not a target rifle and the included optic is a starting point rather than a destination, which we would rather say plainly than let you find out.

Every firearm we ship goes to a licensed dealer in your state for the transfer and the background check. Call us if you need help finding a shop near you that accepts transfers.
