Description

The Rossi R95 44 Magnum Pistol is a lever action with no shoulder stock – a bird’s head grip where the buttstock would be, a 13.25-inch barrel, and a large loop lever with a paracord wrap. It holds six in the tube and one in the chamber, it is finished in black Cerakote throughout, and there is a Picatinny rail already mounted on top of the receiver for an optic.

It is legally a pistol, and that is the point of the design: all the handling of a short lever gun without the paperwork that a short-barrelled rifle requires.

Part number 95P044131, UPC 754908345809, thirteen in stock.

What the Rossi R95 44 Magnum Pistol is

  • Lever action in .44 Remington Magnum, 6+1 capacity
  • 13.25-inch barrel with a full-length tube magazine underneath
  • Black Cerakote on the barrel and the steel frame
  • Bird’s head grip in place of a buttstock
  • Large loop lever with a paracord wrap
  • Picatinny rail on the receiver, no drilling or gunsmithing needed
  • Rossi is part of the same group as Taurus, and shares its service network

Why a .44 Magnum out of 13 inches is worth having

  • The Rossi R95 44 Magnum Pistol barrel turns the cartridge into something close to a light rifle cartridge. The same load that makes 1,200 feet per second out of a revolver will make considerably more here, because the powder finally has somewhere to burn
  • Recoil is mild for the power on offer, because the gun weighs far more than a revolver in the same calibre
  • Six plus one, and a tube you can top up without opening an action – a lever gun can be kept fed one round at a time
  • The Rossi R95 44 Magnum Pistol handles in tight spaces in a way no rifle does. Truck, boat, blind, pack
  • It is as close to a carbine as you can get without a stock, a tax stamp, and a wait

Read this before you buy: it is a pistol, and it must stay one

The Rossi R95 44 Magnum Pistol is sold and transferred as a handgun because it has no shoulder stock and never has. Fitting a stock to it would create a short-barrelled rifle, which is a National Firearms Act item requiring ATF approval, a tax stamp and a wait before the work is done. MAG5 Firearms does not sell NFA items and we are not in a position to advise on that process – if it interests you, speak to a dealer who handles NFA transfers before you buy any parts.

Left alone, the Rossi R95 44 Magnum Pistol is simply a pistol, and it ships to you through your local FFL like any other handgun. Age and residency rules for handguns apply, which are different from long gun rules in most states – check yours.

Feeding it

.44 Remington Magnum and .44 Special are both dimensioned and pressure-rated by SAAMI. Tube magazines want flat or wide-nose bullets rather than sharp points, because the rounds sit nose to primer. Most .44 factory ammunition is already flat-nosed or hollow-pointed, but it is worth checking.

What else takes the same ammunition

If you would rather have a revolver in the same calibre, the Taurus Model 44 with the 6.5-inch barrel is the six-shot large-frame option and the 4-inch stainless version is the carry-sized one. The Tracker 44 is the lighter five-shot, and the Raging Hunter in .44 is the scoped hunting revolver. Any .44 Magnum you buy will run in all of them.

Why the Rossi R95 44 Magnum Pistol earns its place

  • Rifle-like velocity from a cartridge most people only ever shoot out of a revolver
  • Optic ready from the box, with a real rail rather than a scout mount
  • Cerakote everywhere, which is the right finish for a gun that will live in a vehicle or a boat
  • Handles like nothing else in the safe, and everyone who picks it up wants to shoot it
  • Thirteen in stock here against one at the distributor

The honest limitation is aiming. Without a stock, you are holding thirteen inches of barrel at arm’s length or braced against something, and that is harder than it sounds with a heavy gun. A red dot on the rail fixes most of it – irons on a pistol this long are a real test of technique. Budget for the optic.

The second thing: it is not a small gun. It will not go under a jacket and it is not a concealed carry proposition in any practical sense. Think of it as a truck gun, a pack gun, or a camp gun that happens to be legally a pistol.

With those two things understood, the Rossi R95 44 Magnum Pistol is one of the more genuinely useful things in the catalogue, and the price is well under what the concept is worth. MAG5 Firearms ships to your FFL.
