Description

A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds are six inert 22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire cartridges turned from solid aluminium, anodised blue and marked 22 WIN MAG DUMMY down the case so nobody can mistake one for live ammunition. Part number 12204. A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds exist so you can prove an action, check a magazine and drill a manual of arms without a live round anywhere near the bench.

Why a 22 Magnum Owner Wants These Specifically

The 22 WMR is a longer, fatter case than 22 Long Rifle, and that difference is exactly where people get into trouble. A 22 LR round will drop into a 22 Magnum chamber and fire, and the result is a badly undersized bullet rattling down an oversized bore, split cases and a gun that can be damaged. Handling calibre-correct dummies is one of the cleaner ways to teach that distinction to a new shooter, because they can feel that the two cartridges are not the same.

Magnum rimfires are also the ones most likely to be picky about feeding. Semi-automatic 22 WMR rifles and pistols have a reputation for being sensitive to magazine condition and case rim geometry, and lever guns and pumps in this chambering use tube magazines that are worth cycling before you trust them in the field. A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds let you run a magazine ten times over and watch what the feed lips and extractor actually do.

The third use is simple honesty about a used gun. If you are buying or selling a 22 Magnum rifle or revolver, cycling six aluminium dummy rounds through it in front of the other person shows the action works without anyone loading live ammunition indoors.

A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds Specifications

A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds are made by A-Zoom, part of Lyman Products and CNC machined in the United States. They are frequently listed by retailers as 22 WMR snap caps, but A-Zoom is deliberate about the distinction and so are we: a rimfire cartridge has no primer pocket, so there is nothing in these to cushion a firing pin.

That matters because dry firing is genuinely hard on some rimfires. On many designs the pin travels past the rim and strikes the chamber mouth, and enough repetitions will peen the edge or crack the pin. Whether your particular rifle or revolver is rated for dry fire is a question for its manual, and these aluminum dummy rounds do not change the answer.

What six rounds buys you is a full cylinder in most 22 Magnum revolvers and enough to load and cycle a typical rotary magazine. If you want to fill a tube magazine or run a class, the twelve pack in 22 Long Rifle is the larger option, though it is a different cartridge and will not serve here.

Practical Notes on Rimfire Dummy Rounds

Keep A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds apart from live ammunition, physically. Blue anodising and lettering help, but the only method that holds up under pressure is separation: dummies live in their own tin or pouch, never loose in the same pocket or can as live rounds. Count them out at the start of a session and count them back in at the end.

A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds are calibre specific. These will not serve a 22 Long Rifle rifle, and a 22 LR dummy will not properly test a 22 Magnum action. If you keep both, our A-Zoom 22 LR dummy rounds in the 12 pack are the matching item for the smaller cartridge, and the 17 HMR training rounds cover the other common magnum rimfire.

The aluminium in A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds wears. Expect the rims to mark where a firing pin lands and the finish to rub where an extractor grips. When a round stops looking obviously like a dummy, retire it. They cost very little and a worn one that gets mistaken for something else is not worth the saving.

The underrated benefit is that these make administrative handling practice possible at home. Loading, unloading, clearing a stoppage and confirming an empty chamber are where most mishandling happens, and they are precisely the skills almost nobody practises, because doing it with live ammunition in a living room is a bad idea.

If you own a 22 Magnum of any kind, a pack of A-Zoom 22 WMR Dummy Rounds is a few dollars that makes the gun easier to check, easier to teach on and easier to sell. Buy them understanding what they do: they prove the action, they do not protect the firing pin. Ships from our licensed inventory in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.

One practical note on storage. These ship on a blister card that carries the manufacturer warning about dry firing, so it is worth reading before the card goes in the bin. After that, a small screw-top tin or a zip pouch in the range bag keeps the six together and stops them migrating into a pocket where they do not belong.
