Description
The Retay Gordion Waterfowl Realtree Legacy is a 12 gauge inertia-driven semi-automatic shotgun with a 26-inch barrel, a 3-inch chamber and full Realtree Legacy camouflage. Retay item GORLEG-26 holds 4+1 rounds and ships with five choke tubes.
Retay Gordion Waterfowl Realtree Legacy Overview
Retay is a Turkish shotgun maker that has built a strong following in the US for well-finished, affordable inertia guns, and the Gordion is its lightest semi-auto platform. It uses Retay’s Straight Line Inertia Transfer action with the patented Inertia Plus rotating bolt and rollover torsion spring, a single-piece alloy receiver and an aluminum trigger group with no plastic parts. The Waterfowl model in Realtree Legacy is set up for ducks and geese, but the 26-inch barrel and 6 pound 6 ounce weight also make it handy in the uplands and the turkey woods.
Realtree Legacy Camouflage
Realtree Legacy is a newer pattern that blends the classic brown and gray tree-bark look Realtree is known for with modern detail, aimed at hunters who want one camo that works in timber, cattails and fall woods. The full dip covers the stock, forend, receiver and barrel. Hydrographic camo holds up well but will eventually wear at contact points like the forend and receiver edges, so a soft case and an occasional wipe-down extend its life.
Inertia Plus Action
Inertia guns use the recoil of the shot rather than gas to cycle, which keeps the action clean and lets the shotgun run a wide range of loads without adjustment. Retay’s Inertia Plus bolt adds a rollover torsion spring that closes the bolt quietly and practically eliminates the rattle or out-of-battery condition some inertia guns suffer when the bolt is eased forward. The tradeoff with any inertia design is more felt recoil than a comparable gas gun, and very light target loads may not cycle reliably.
Barrel, Chokes and Sights
The barrel is deep-bore drilled with a factory-lengthened forcing cone, which Retay says puts more pellets on target. It wears a TruGlo fiber optic bead and accepts five included choke tubes: cylinder, improved cylinder, modified, improved modified and full. For steel shot, stick to the more open constrictions recommended in the manual and avoid running steel through tight full chokes unless they are marked as steel-rated. The 3-inch chamber handles nearly all common waterfowl and turkey loads.
Easy Out Unloading and Handling
Retay’s Easy Out Magazine Unloading lets you empty the tube without cycling each shell through the action, a real convenience when you climb out of a duck blind or cross a fence. The 14.37-inch length of pull suits most adults wearing a jacket, and at about 6 pounds 6 ounces the gun is light enough to carry all day. The tradeoff of a light 12 gauge is recoil with heavy 3-inch loads, so a good recoil pad and a solid mount matter.
Honest Caveats
Retay backs the Gordion with a limited lifetime warranty, but service is handled through Retay USA rather than local gunsmiths, and parts availability is narrower than for Beretta or Benelli. Resale value usually trails those brands. The 26-inch barrel swings quickly but some goose hunters prefer 28 inches for longer passes. Camo finishes are hard to touch up once worn. Migratory bird rules limit shotguns to three shells, so make sure a magazine plug is installed before hunting ducks or geese.
State Laws and Ownership
Semi-automatic shotguns with standard tube magazines are legal to own in all 50 states, but purchase rules vary. Some states require a permit, license or firearm owner ID card to buy a long gun, including New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois and New York, and a few add waiting periods. Non-toxic shot is required for waterfowl everywhere in the US. In Pennsylvania the shotgun transfers through a licensed dealer with a background check.
