Description
A Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge weighs five pounds six ounces, wears a rounded alloy receiver against Turkish walnut and carries a 24 inch barrel. It is about as close as a semi automatic gets to the feel of a good double, and it exists for people who walk a very long way for a very small number of shots.
What a Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge Gives You
The Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge trades on a bore that shoots above its reputation. The short shot column produces good patterns with modest payloads, recoil is genuinely mild, and a gun built on a scaled frame rather than cut down from a twenty carries like nothing else. Five pounds six ounces is a number you stop noticing after the first mile.
Semi automatic twenty eights like the Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge are rare, and most of the ones that exist are gas guns. An inertia action suits the bore better because it adds less weight to a gun whose entire appeal is being light. Retay Inertia Plus bolt uses a rollover torsion spring to rotate the bolt head positively into battery, which solves the old inertia gun complaint about being knocked out of lockup.
The Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge receiver is what separates the R line from the standard Ace. Retay calls it a streamlined profile, which rounds off the squared lines into something closer to a classic field gun. Against walnut and in this bore it is the configuration that looks the part as well as carrying it.
Barrel, Capacity and Fit
The Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge barrel is deep bore drilled from straight stock with a factory lengthened forcing cone. On a small bore that matters more than it does on a twelve, because you have fewer pellets to work with and every one that survives the transition into the barrel counts on the pattern board.
Capacity on the Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge is 2+1 with a 3 inch chamber, which is plenty over a pointing dog and already plugged for migratory bird rules. Five flush chokes ship in the box covering cylinder through full, and the sight is a single fiber optic bead.
A Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge has a 14.5 inch length of pull and a shim kit for drop and cast, and the trigger group comes out at the push of a button with no tools. A gun this light shows up a poor fit immediately, so spend the twenty minutes with the shims before the season rather than after.

Who Should Buy One
Upland hunters who have shot a twenty eight and cannot go back are the audience. Quail, woodcock, grouse and early season doves. A Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge does that work with very little recoil and very little weight, and gives you a third shell if the first two go astray.
It is also an excellent gun for a younger or smaller framed shooter who has outgrown a youth twenty. Recoil is mild enough that nobody develops a flinch, the gun mounts easily, and the shim kit means the stock can be fitted rather than grown into.
The honest limitation is ammunition. Twenty eight gauge shells cost more and are harder to find than twelve or twenty, and the load selection is narrower, particularly in non toxic shot. Buy a case when you find a load that patterns well in your gun.
A few practical notes before ordering a Retay Ace-R Upland Ultralight 28 Gauge. Fit the stock with the included shim kit before you hunt it, because a five pound gun shows up a poor fit immediately. Break the action in with standard field loads rather than the lightest target shells, since inertia systems need recoil energy to cycle reliably when new and a small bore has less of it to give. Stock up on ammunition when you find something that patterns well. And use the push button trigger group removal for cleaning.
