Description

The Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge is the plainest and least expensive way into the rounded receiver Ace-R line. Matte black synthetic, a 26 inch barrel, a 3 inch chamber, and nothing on the price tag paying for wood figure or camouflage you did not ask for.

What the Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge Gives You

The Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge receiver is what separates the R line from the standard Ace. Retay calls it a streamlined profile, which rounds off the squared lines into something closer to a traditional shotgun. Construction is alloy with no polymer components inside, which keeps a twenty gauge light enough to carry comfortably.

The Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge action is inertia driven. The Inertia Plus bolt uses a rollover torsion spring to rotate the bolt head positively into battery, which is the fix for the one legitimate weakness inertia guns used to have. With no gas system there is nothing to foul after a wet morning and less to clean at the end of a season.

The Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge finish is matte black synthetic rather than wood or camouflage, and that is the entire reason this model costs less than the others in the line. Nothing mechanical is different. If you would rather spend the difference on shells, this is the version to buy.

Chamber, Capacity and Setup

A 3 inch chamber and 3+1 capacity on the Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge covers light dove loads right through heavier steel for ducks over decoys. Twenty gauge steel has improved enormously over the past decade, and a properly choked twenty is no longer a handicap inside sensible range.

The Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge barrel is deep bore drilled from straight stock rather than hammer forged around a mandrel, and the forcing cone is lengthened at the factory. Both changes aim at more consistent patterns and a softer push, and in a light twenty gauge you notice both.

Length of pull is 14.5 inches with a shim kit for drop and cast, and the trigger group comes out at the push of a button with no tools. A Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge stored with its trigger group removed cannot be fired, which is a genuine safety feature rather than a selling line.

Who Should Buy It

Mixed bag hunters on a budget are the fit. A Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge will shoot doves in September, pheasants in October and ducks over decoys in November, and it costs meaningfully less than the wood and camo versions of the same gun.

It also suits a shooter stepping down from a twelve, or a younger shooter moving up from a youth gun. Recoil is milder, the gun carries better, and the shim kit lets the stock be fitted properly rather than grown into.

Where it is less at home is hard weather waterfowl hunting where camouflage genuinely matters. Retay builds the Ace-R in Realtree Legacy and Bronze Bottomland for that, at the same weight and on the same action.

A few practical notes before ordering a Retay Ace-R Extra Black 20 Gauge. Fit the stock with the included shim kit before the season, because fit matters more on a light gun than on a heavy one. Break the action in with normal field loads rather than the softest target shells, since inertia systems need recoil energy to cycle reliably when new. Pattern the gun with the load you intend to hunt, because twenty gauge is more choke sensitive than twelve. And use the push button trigger group removal for cleaning.
