Description

Pro-Shot 12 Gauge Semi Auto Snap Caps are a two pack of solid brass dummy rounds with a spring loaded primer face, made by Pro-Shot as part number 12SEMI-SC. They exist to do two jobs: let you dry fire a shotgun without hammering the firing pin into an empty chamber, and give you an inert round to check feeding, extraction and ejection with.

What a Snap Cap Is Actually For
Dry firing a shotgun on an empty chamber lets the firing pin travel further than it was designed to and slam against its own retaining shoulder. On some designs that is harmless and on others it peens the pin, cracks it or fatigues the spring. A snap cap gives the pin something to hit. The spring loaded face absorbs the strike and returns, which is why brass snap caps last for thousands of cycles rather than deforming after a dozen.
The second job is the one people underrate. Solid brass makes these heavy enough and dimensionally correct enough to cycle through a magazine tube and an action the way a live shell does. That makes them the right tool for checking that a new gun feeds, that an aftermarket magazine extension works, or that a shell lifter is timed properly, all without a live round anywhere near the gun.
For 12 gauge dry fire training specifically, they let you practise trigger control, mount and follow through at home. Clay shooting rewards a smooth trigger pull more than most people expect, and dry practice is where that gets built. Two in a package is enough for an over under or for loading a semi automatic to check function.

Honest Notes on Dry Fire
A snap cap is not a safety device and should never be treated as one. Inert brass in the chamber looks nothing like an empty gun to anyone glancing at it, and the standard safety rules apply unchanged: point it in a safe direction, know your target, treat every firearm as loaded. Plenty of negligent discharges have happened because someone believed a dummy round was in the chamber and it was not.
Store them separately from live ammunition. Pro-Shot 12 Gauge Semi Auto Snap Caps are brass and roughly shell shaped, and in a dim room or a cluttered range bag the difference is easier to miss than you would like. A labelled box or a different pocket costs nothing and removes the possibility entirely.
Two per package is right for an over under and thin for a pump or semi automatic if you want to load the magazine and cycle a full string. If you plan to test a magazine extension or run repeated feeding checks, buy two packs rather than one.
Finally, not every shotgun needs them. Many modern designs are rated for dry firing and some manufacturers explicitly say so in the manual. Check yours before assuming. Where a snap cap always earns its place is function testing, and that is true regardless of what the manual says about dry fire.
If you are setting up a shotgun we also stock the Allen 12 and 20 gauge cleaning kit and 12 gauge bronze bristle bore brushes. Full product details are on the Pro-Shot Products page.
Pro-Shot 12 Gauge Semi Auto Snap Caps suit clay shooters practising trigger control at home, anyone function testing a new or modified shotgun, and owners who want to protect a firing pin during storage. MAG5 Firearms is a family owned FFL in Collegeville, Pennsylvania.
