Why This Load Works for Doves and Quail

Doves and quail are small, quick birds that rarely give you a long look. The right load puts a dense pattern of small pellets in the air so at least a few strike vital areas. #8 shot is a proven choice for these birds because it balances pellet count with enough energy per pellet to bring birds down cleanly at typical field distances.

A 1 ounce charge is the traditional field weight for light upland work. It delivers a solid pattern while keeping recoil manageable, which matters on a dove shoot where you may fire several boxes in an afternoon. Lighter recoil also helps you recover quickly for a second shot on a fast single or a passing pair.

At about 1,250 fps, this load moves fast enough to reduce lead on crossing birds without the heavy kick of high-velocity magnum loads. Paired with an improved cylinder or modified choke, it produces patterns that work well from close flushes out to the edge of typical shotgun range.

PPU has produced ammunition for well over a century, and its Stars and Stripes shotshells are built for dependable, affordable field use. The PPU 20ga Dove Quail 8 Shot is the kind of shell you buy by the case before opening day.

Field Notes and Hunting Tips

Pattern your shotgun with this 20ga dove load before the season. Fire at a large sheet of paper from 25 and 35 yards and look for an even spread without big gaps. Changing chokes is the quickest way to tighten or open your pattern.

Lead your birds more than you think. Doves change speed and direction constantly, and most misses happen behind the bird. Keep the gun moving through the shot and follow through after you pull the trigger.

Check your local regulations before hunting. Some areas, including many public lands and waterfowl areas, require nonlead shot, and dove field rules can vary from one property to the next.

Bring more shells than you expect to need. A busy dove field can go through several boxes in an afternoon, and running out while birds are flying is a common regret. Pick up your empty hulls before you leave to keep fields clean for the landowner.

Store spare boxes in a cool, dry place. A shell bag or vest that holds a full box makes reloading in the field faster, especially when birds are flying steadily.

This load is a strong fit for dove hunters, quail hunters, and anyone who wants an affordable field load for small upland birds. It also works well for casual clay shooting and practice before the season opens. If you need a dependable 20ga bird shot load for high-volume days in the field, the PPU 20ga Dove Quail 8 Shot is a proven choice.
