Description

The Phoenix Rising Slug and Buck 12 GA puts two kinds of payload in one shell: a 7/8 ounce hardened alloy slug stacked with six hard-cast 00 buckshot pellets. Phoenix Rising rates the load at about 1,225 fps with roughly 2,356 ft-lbs of combined energy from a standard 2-3/4 inch hull. It is a slug and buckshot combo intended for close-range defense and short-range hunting.

How the Phoenix Rising Slug and Buck 12 GA Works

A conventional shell forces a choice between a slug for penetration and buckshot for spread. This load tries to deliver both. When fired, the slug leads while the six 00 buckshot pellets follow and begin to spread with distance. At very close range the whole payload arrives as a tight cluster; as distance grows, the pellets open up around the slug.

Every projectile in the shell is FSJ coated. FSJ stands for full synthetic jacket, a polymer coating that Phoenix Rising says reduces deformation of the projectiles as they travel down the barrel, helping velocity, penetration and consistency. FSJ coated projectiles also reduce direct lead contact with the bore, which can mean less leading than bare lead shot.

The hull is 2-3/4 inches, so the Phoenix Rising Slug and Buck 12 GA chambers in virtually any modern 12 gauge shotgun, including those with 3 inch and 3-1/2 inch chambers.

Performance Considerations

Combination loads behave differently from single-projectile ammunition, and the honest reality is that the slug and pellets will not always land in the same place. Beyond typical indoor distances, 00 buckshot pellets can drift several inches or more from the slug impact, and every shotgun patterns differently. Pattern the Phoenix Rising Slug and Buck 12 GA on paper at the distances you expect to use it before relying on it.

Choke selection matters. Many shotgun makers advise against running slugs through full or extra-full chokes, so check your owner manual and stick with cylinder or improved cylinder when in doubt. A more open choke also tends to give the most predictable pattern from mixed loads.

As 12 gauge defense ammo, this is a powerful option, but more projectiles also means more chances of a stray pellet. Every pellet and the slug itself can penetrate interior walls. If you live in an apartment, a townhouse, or have family members in adjacent rooms, weigh that risk carefully and know what is behind your target. Recoil is noticeable but typical of full-power 12 gauge loads.
