NSI Target Steel 12ga 7 Shot Overview
NSI Target Steel brings non-toxic steel shot to the clay range. More ranges, clubs and public lands now require non-toxic shot, and a steel target load lets you keep shooting there at a sensible cost. Because steel is lighter than lead, these shells are loaded fast to keep breaks crisp at normal target distances, which makes them a practical choice for lead-free ranges and for early-season dove fields on non-toxic ground.
How Target Steel Works
Steel shot is lighter and harder than lead, so it patterns tighter through a given choke and loses energy a little faster downrange. Higher velocity helps make up the difference at normal clay distances. The wad is designed for steel and protects the barrel. Check that your barrel and chokes are rated for steel shot before shooting these loads.
Shot Size and Use
#7 steel is a common target size that patterns densely at normal clay distances. It suits trap, skeet and sporting clays at normal target distances. Pattern your gun with this load, because every barrel and choke combination reacts a little differently.
Choke Notes
Steel patterns tighter than lead through a given choke, so open up one step from what you would use with lead. Never fire steel through a choke marked lead only, and check older barrels before use.
Chamber and Recoil
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns chambered for 2-3/4 inch shells or longer. Recoil is in line with other loads of this gauge and payload. A well-fitted gun, a good recoil pad and a consistent mount keep long days comfortable.
Rules and Regulations
Steel shot meets non-toxic shot requirements on ranges and lands that do not allow lead. Check your range and state rules, and confirm your gun is rated for steel.
Choosing the Right Load
Steel target loads let you keep shooting where lead is not allowed. Because steel is lighter than lead, many shooters go up one shot size and open their choke a step compared with what they would use with lead. Try a few stations with both #6 and #7 to see which breaks targets best with your gun at your range.
Patterning Tips
Shoot a few shells at a large paper target from the distance you expect to shoot. Look at how evenly the pellets spread, check for gaps, and note where the center of the pattern lands compared with your point of aim. Trying more than one choke is the quickest way to find what works best with your gun.
