NSI Steel Waterfowl 12ga 2 Shot Case Overview
NSI Steel Waterfowl is a fast, non-toxic hunting load for ducks and geese. Steel is lighter than lead, so speed is what keeps pellet energy up, and this load pushes a 1-1/4 ounce charge at a rated 1450 fps. It is a dependable, sensibly priced load to keep in the duck blind all season long.
How Steel Waterfowl Works
The shell uses plated steel shot in a waterfowl wad that protects the barrel and keeps the shot column together. Steel is hard and does not deform in the barrel, so patterns stay even and tight. A water-resistant build helps the shells handle wet days in the marsh.
Shot Size and Use
#2 steel is a popular all-round waterfowl size, with enough energy for geese at decoy range and big ducks such as mallards. It is a good everyday choice for big ducks and geese at decoy range, and a full case keeps you stocked for the season. Pattern your gun with this load, because every barrel and choke combination reacts a little differently.
Choke Notes
Steel patterns tighter than lead, so most makers suggest improved cylinder or modified chokes. Some older barrels and full chokes are not rated for steel; check your gun manual or choke markings first.
Chamber and Recoil
Fire this shell only in 12 gauge shotguns chambered for 3 inch shells or longer. Recoil is in line with other loads of this gauge and payload. A well-fitted gun, a good recoil pad and a consistent mount keep long days comfortable.
Rules and Regulations
Federal rules require non-toxic shot for migratory waterfowl hunting across the United States, and this steel load meets that requirement. Always check your state regulations, bag limits and plug requirements before you hunt.
Choosing the Right Load
Match shot size to the birds you expect. #4 and #3 steel cover most ducks over decoys, #2 handles big ducks and geese at decoy range, and BB is a classic goose size. Many waterfowlers carry two sizes and switch as the birds and distances change through the day and the season.
Patterning Tips
Shoot a few shells at a large paper target from the distance you expect to shoot. Look at how evenly the pellets spread, check for gaps, and note where the center of the pattern lands compared with your point of aim. Trying more than one choke is the quickest way to find what works best with your gun.
