Nosler 222 Rem 50gr Ballistic Tip Varmint ammunition box

Nosler 222 Rem 50gr Ballistic Tip pairs one of the most accurate cartridges ever designed with a bullet built to come apart on impact. The .222 Remington dominated benchrest competition through the 1950s and 1960s and still shoots beautifully, and the 50 grain Ballistic Tip Varmint bullet gives it the terminal behaviour varmint hunters want. Twenty rounds to the box.

Why the Triple Deuce Still Shoots

The .222 Remington earned its reputation the hard way, by winning benchrest matches for two decades before the 6mm PPC arrived. The case is efficient, the pressures are mild and the cartridge is inherently accurate, which is why a lot of old Sako and Remington 722 rifles chambered for it still outshoot much newer rifles. It is a quieter, gentler cartridge than a .223 Remington and gives up very little inside 250 yards.

The Ballistic Tip Varmint bullet is what makes this 222 Remington varmint ammo do its job. A polymer tip drives back into an ultra thin jacket mouth on impact, which produces rapid and violent expansion across a wide velocity band. On prairie dogs and groundhogs the effect is decisive and there is very little risk of a ricochet, because the bullet does not survive the impact.

Accuracy expectations should be high. This is a cartridge that habitually shoots into half an inch out of a decent rifle, and Nosler builds the ammunition around a match grade bullet. If your rifle does not group well with this polymer tipped varmint load, the problem is usually the rifle, the scope or the shooter rather than the ammunition.

Nosler 222 Rem 50gr Ballistic Tip Specifications

Nosler loads this ammunition in the United States. The 50 grain Ballistic Tip Varmint bullet carries a G1 ballistic coefficient of 0.238, which is modest, so expect wind drift to become the limiting factor before energy does.

Honest Notes on the 222 Remington

Availability is the real problem with the .222 Remington and it always has been since the .223 took over. Factory ammunition appears and disappears, and the range of loads is narrow. If your rifle likes Nosler 222 Rem 50gr Ballistic Tip, buy several boxes when you find them and keep the brass, because .222 cases are worth more than the ammunition sometimes.

Do not use this bullet for anything larger than vermin. The Ballistic Tip Varmint is deliberately fragile. It is designed to disintegrate, and on a deer sized animal it will produce a shallow wound and a long tracking job. Several states prohibit .22 centerfire for deer for exactly this reason, and where it is legal it is still a poor choice.

The modest ballistic coefficient limits practical range more than energy does. At 0.238 G1 this bullet drifts noticeably in wind past 250 yards, and prairie dog shooters working at 300 plus will find themselves guessing. Inside 250 yards it is superb.

Finally, check your twist rate if you are considering heavier bullets later. Most .222 Remington rifles use a slow twist suited to 40 to 55 grain bullets, which is exactly where this load sits, but it also means the cartridge cannot take advantage of modern heavy .224 projectiles.

If you handload, we stock 222 Remington die sets and the Sellier and Bellot 222 Remington soft point is the budget factory alternative. Nosler publishes its ammunition data on the Nosler website.

Nosler 222 Rem 50gr Ballistic Tip suits prairie dog and groundhog shooters running a Sako L461, Remington 700 or 722, CZ 527 or any other rifle chambered for the triple deuce. MAG5 Firearms is a family owned FFL in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. Boxes ship where state and local law allows.
