North American Arms Pug DP Ported Overview
The Pug DP is model NAA-PUG-DP (UPC 744253002632). Distributor specifications list a 1 inch heavy barrel, about 4.5 inches overall, roughly 6.4 ounces, five rounds of 22 WMR and black rubber grips. The XS white dot front sight is fast to pick up in daylight and good indoor lighting, but it does not glow, so a flashlight matters in the dark.
How the Pug Works
The Pug DP uses the same proven single-action, removable-cylinder system as NAA’s other mini-revolvers. You cock the hammer for each shot, and to reload you remove the cylinder pin, take the cylinder out, swap cartridges and put it back. Safety notches between the chambers give the hammer a place to rest for carry. The heavier barrel shroud and the full rubber grip make the Pug noticeably easier to hold and aim than the slim wood-gripped minis.
Ported Barrel and Sight
Ports near the muzzle push gas upward to keep the front sight on target between shots. The cost is extra blast and flash, which is very noticeable from a 1 inch barrel. Pair that with the large, bright front dot and the Pug is the easiest NAA mini to shoot quickly at close range. The rear notch is small, so align the dot on the target and squeeze.
Ammunition
The Pug DP is chambered only for 22 WMR (22 Magnum). Never fire 22 LR, 22 Short or 22 WRF in it. Magnum rimfire costs more per round than 22 LR and supply can be uneven, so buy a few boxes of the load you trust and test it in your revolver. Short barrels give up a lot of the velocity printed on the box, and loads designed for short barrels tend to expand more reliably than rifle-oriented ammunition.
Living With a Pug
Be realistic about what a tiny rimfire revolver does well. The Pug DP is loud for its size, flash is heavy in low light, and sights are minimal, so practical accuracy is measured in a few yards for most shooters. Rimfire ignition is less certain than centerfire, which is one more reason to test your carry ammunition. The Pug’s bigger rubber grip is a real improvement, but it also makes the gun a bit thicker in a pocket.
White Dot or Tritium
NAA offers the ported Pug with either this XS white dot or a tritium insert (the Pug TP). The white dot is cheaper and works well wherever there is light to see it. If you expect to need the gun at night, the tritium version is worth the difference. Prefer no ports? The unported Pug D has the same white dot sight.
State Laws and Ownership
Pennsylvania buyers complete a standard handgun transfer with a PICS check at the receiving dealer, and carrying concealed outside your home or vehicle generally requires a License to Carry Firearms. Some states keep approved-handgun rosters (California and Massachusetts are the best-known examples) and may not allow the NAA Pug DP Ported; New York, New Jersey and several cities add permit steps of their own.
