The Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Tri-MOA Reticle

Tri-MOA is a duplex with three fine reference points added below and either side of the centre, spaced in minutes of angle rather than in yards. It gives you holdover and wind reference without the ladder of a full ballistic reticle, so the view stays clean enough for a running shot in cover.

Because the marks are in MOA rather than yards, they work with any cartridge once you have done the arithmetic. That is the opposite philosophy to a calibre specific reticle, and for a shooter who reloads or changes loads it is the more useful of the two.

MOA marks also survive a load change. A yardage calibrated reticle is scrap the day you switch bullet weights; the Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Tri-MOA just needs you to reshoot your dope and write down new numbers.

The reticle is in the second focal plane, so it holds its apparent size through the zoom range and the MOA subtensions are true at one magnification only. Having both a CDS dial and reference marks is not redundant. The dial is for a shot you have time to set up: range, turn, hold centre. The reticle marks are for the shot you do not, where an animal steps out at a distance you have not dialled for and you need a reference now rather than in ten seconds.

Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Tri-MOA Optics and Adjustment

Three to nine power through a 40mm objective on a one inch tube. Field of view at 100 yards is 33.1 feet at 3x and 13.6 feet at 9x, eye relief 4.2 inches down to 3.7. Quarter MOA clicks with 60 MOA of travel in elevation and 60 in windage. Parallax is fixed and set parallax free at 150 yards.

The first custom dial is included with the scope, which is the single biggest reason to pay the difference over a capped turret model. Order it for the load you will actually hunt with, and confirm it on paper before you trust it in the field.

The Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Tri-MOA weighs 12.2 ounces and measures 12.49 inches. Leupold rate it 100 percent waterproof and fogproof and guarantee it for life. It is designed, machined and assembled in Oregon. They publish no finish colour and no lens coating name for this model, so we have not listed either as a manufacturer figure.

Sixty MOA of elevation is plenty on a 3-9×40 hunting rifle but not generous, so if you plan to mount the Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×40 Tri-MOA on a rail with built in elevation, check the numbers first. A standard two piece base leaves you far more adjustment than you will ever dial.
