Description
The Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 is a low power variable optic: one power at the bottom, six at the top, with a daylight bright illuminated FireDot Duplex and a locking custom dial on a 30mm tube. It is the scope for a rifle that has to shoot at fifteen yards and at three hundred without changing optics. Mag5 Firearms ships optics direct with no FFL transfer.
What the Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 Gives You at 1x
At true one power a scope shows the world at life size, which means you can shoot it with both eyes open exactly like a red dot. The illuminated FireDot becomes the aiming point and the scope stops feeling like a scope. Field of view at 100 yards is 120.9 feet, which is an enormous window.
Then you turn the ring and the same optic gives you six power and a 19.2 foot field for a deliberate shot. That is the whole argument for a low power variable, and it is why the Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 suits a general purpose rifle better than either a fixed red dot or a 3-9x does.
Be realistic about the top end though. Six power is enough for a deliberate shot at a deer sized target out to about three hundred yards, and it is not a long range scope. If most of your shooting is past that, the 3-18x versions of the Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 family are the better buy and we stock those too.
The Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 FireDot Reticle
FireDot is a plain duplex with an illuminated centre dot, eight brightness settings, daylight bright at the top. On a 1-6x that illumination is not a nicety, it is the feature that makes 1x usable: without a bright dot you are looking through a very wide window at a thin black crosshair, and your eye will not find it fast enough to matter.
Power is a CR2032 giving roughly 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high. The reticle is second focal plane, so it keeps the same apparent size across the whole range rather than shrinking to a hair at 1x, which on this class of scope is the right choice.
Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 Turrets and Travel
Elevation is a CDS-SZL2 dial with Zero Lock 2: a custom dial engraved in yards for your load, locking at your zero so it cannot creep, with a revolution indicator and SpeedSet rezero. Windage is a Zero-Lock turret. Quarter MOA clicks, 20 MOA per revolution.
Total travel is 180 MOA in both elevation and windage, which is a very large figure and comes from the 30mm tube. On a 1-6x you will never use most of it, but it means the Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 will zero on almost any base including canted rails with built in elevation.
Leupold rate the Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 illumination as daylight bright, which is a genuine distinction rather than a marketing line. Plenty of illuminated reticles are only visible at dusk. This one stays usable in full sun, which on a 1x optic is exactly when you need it.
Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 Weight and Parallax
The Leupold VX-6HD 1-6×24 weighs 17.4 ounces and measures 10.7 inches, which is compact for a 30mm scope and light for what it does. Parallax is fixed and set parallax free at 150 yards, so there is no side focus to manage while you are shooting fast.
One note on Leupold published data: their specification table for this model gives the fixed 150 yard parallax figure and also carries a row for a 50 yard minimum parallax free distance, which does not belong on a fixed parallax scope. We have printed the fixed 150 yard figure, which matches the product name and the rest of the table, and we are telling you the other row exists rather than quietly choosing for you.
