Description
The Leupold VX-3HD Boone and Crockett is item 180620, a 4.5-14×40 hunting scope on a 1 inch tube. Three different scopes have been sold in this shop under almost the same title. This is the one with the Boone and Crockett ranging reticle.
Which 4.5-14×40 is this, and how the three differ
Item 180620 is a 1 inch tube with a Boone and Crockett reticle. Item 180619 is the same scope in every published respect except that it carries a plain Duplex. Item 180623 is a different animal: a 30 mm tube with a Wind-Plex reticle and side focus.
So between the first two, the reticle is the only thing you are choosing. Between those and the third, you are also choosing tube diameter, which decides what rings will fit. Getting that wrong is an expensive afternoon.
What the Boone and Crockett reticle gives you
It is a ranging and holdover reticle, built around stadia that let you estimate distance off an animal of known size and then hold for drop without touching a turret. It is aimed squarely at open-country big game.
The Leupold VX-3HD Boone and Crockett is a second focal plane riflescope, which matters here more than usual. Those stadia are only calibrated at one magnification. Read the manual, find the power your holds are cut for, and set the ring there before you use them.
The reticle is not illuminated. There is no battery in this scope at all, which is one fewer thing to fail in the cold and one fewer thing to carry a spare for.
Glass, turrets and travel
Magnification runs 4.5x to 14x behind a 40 mm objective. Eye relief is 4.4 inches at the bottom and 3.6 at the top. Field of view is 19.9 feet at low power and 7.4 feet at high, per 100 yards.
Elevation on the Leupold VX-3HD Boone and Crockett is a CDS-ZL locking dial; windage is finger click. Both move in 1/4 MOA increments, with 70 MOA of total travel in each direction at 15 MOA per revolution. The elevation dial travel limit is 14.5 MOA.
Parallax is fixed, set parallax-free at 150 yards. There is no side focus on this model. For the ranges this reticle is designed around, that is a defensible choice, and it keeps the scope light.
Honest notes on the Leupold VX-3HD Boone and Crockett
Light it is: 13.3 ounces and 12.67 inches. That is more than two ounces under the 30 mm Wind-Plex version and it shows on a mountain rifle. The trade is 70 MOA of elevation instead of 95, and no parallax adjustment.
A ranging reticle is only as good as the practice behind it. If you are not going to learn the subtensions, the Duplex version of this identical scope will give you a cleaner picture for the same money. Be honest with yourself about which one you are.
Leupold publishes no finish colour, no lens coating list and no light transmission figure for this model. Retail listings print all three anyway. We do not put numbers on a page that the manufacturer does not state.
Who this scope suits
Western hunters glassing open country, anyone who wants holdover without a turret, and shooters who value a light 1 inch tube over adjustment range. The Leupold VX-3HD Boone and Crockett is guaranteed for life.
Skip it if you need adjustable parallax, if you want the extra elevation of the 30 mm model, or if a plain crosshair suits the way you actually shoot.
