The Leupold VX-3HD 4.5-14×40 Duplex is the one inch tube, fixed parallax version of Leupold mid range hunting scope, with a CDS-ZL elevation dial and a plain duplex reticle. Which Scope the Leupold VX-3HD 4.5-14×40 Duplex Actually Is
Barcode 030317028404 is Leupold item 180619. It has a ONE INCH main tube, a Duplex reticle and fixed parallax set at 150 yards, and it weighs 13.3 ounces. The other listing on this site with the same name is item 180623: a THIRTY MILLIMETRE tube with a Wind-Plex reticle and adjustable side focus, at 15.6 ounces.
The tube diameter is the part that will actually cost you money if you get it wrong, because one inch rings will not hold a 30mm scope and vice versa. If you already own rings, check them before you choose. We have retitled both listings so the difference is visible from the shop page rather than buried in a spec sheet.
Both are good scopes. Neither is a downgrade of the other. They are aimed at different rifles, and the only reason anyone would confuse them is that the manufacturer feed we receive gives both the same short name.
The Leupold VX-3HD 4.5-14×40 Duplex CDS-ZL Turret
CDS-ZL is Leupold Custom Dial System with Zero Lock. The custom dial part means you can order a turret engraved in yards for your specific load, so you range an animal, turn the dial to that number and hold dead on. The Zero Lock part means the dial physically locks at your zero and will not creep back past it in a scabbard or a truck.
Zero Lock is the feature people underrate. A dial that has quietly turned two clicks while you walked in is worse than no dial at all, because you have no reason to suspect it. The Leupold VX-3HD 4.5-14×40 Duplex cannot do that.
Leupold VX-3HD 4.5-14×40 Duplex Optics
Four and a half to fourteen power through a 40mm objective. Field of view at 100 yards is 19.9 feet at the bottom of the range and 7.4 feet at the top. Eye relief is 4.4 inches low and 3.6 inches high, consistent across the range, which is one of the practical advantages of the VX-3HD over cheaper glass.
The reticle is a plain duplex in the second focal plane. With a CDS dial handling elevation there is no reason to clutter the picture with holdover marks, and the heavy outer posts still pull your eye to the centre when the light drops.
VX-3HD sits a step above the VX-Freedom in Leupold range, and what you are buying at that step is glass and low light performance rather than features. If you hunt the first and last half hour of the day, the Leupold VX-3HD 4.5-14×40 Duplex shows you noticeably more than a Freedom at the same magnification.
Leupold VX-3HD 4.5-14×40 Duplex Adjustment and Parallax
Quarter MOA clicks with 70 MOA of travel in elevation and 70 in windage. Parallax is fixed and set parallax free at 150 yards, so there is no side focus knob. On a hunting scope that is usually the right trade: one fewer thing to get wrong in the field, at the cost of a slightly softer image very close or very far.
If you want side focus on a 4.5-14×40, that is the 30mm Wind-Plex version rather than this one. It focuses down to 75 yards and gives more elevation travel, but it is heavier and needs different rings.
