Description
The Leupold Mark 5HD TMR 35mm is item 173296, a 3.6-18×44 first focal plane scope. Before anything else: the 35 mm in the old title is the MAIN TUBE, not the objective. The objective is 44 mm. This scope needs 35 mm rings.
What the Leupold Mark 5HD TMR 35mm actually is
The listing has carried the title MARK 5HD 35MM, which names no magnification at all and invites you to read 35 mm as a lens size. It is not. This is the 3.6-18×44 with the M5C3 elevation turret, a TMR reticle and a matte black finish.
That tube diameter is the single most consequential fact on this page. Rings and one-piece mounts in 35 mm exist, but the market is narrower than for 30 mm or 34 mm, they cost more, and nobody at the range will have a spare set. Price the mount at the same time as the scope.
The TMR is a milliradian reticle, matched to turrets that click in 0.1 MIL. Reticle and dials agree, so a correction read off the glass is dialled without conversion.
First focal plane and no battery
The Leupold Mark 5HD TMR 35mm is a first focal plane scope, so the TMR subtensions hold true at every magnification. A 1.4 MIL hold is 1.4 MIL at 6x and at 18x, which is the whole reason first focal plane glass exists.
It is not illuminated and there is no battery in it. That removes a failure point and it also removes any help in the last few minutes of light, when a fine first focal plane reticle at the bottom of the zoom range is at its hardest to see.
Turrets, travel and parallax
Elevation is the M5C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is capped, so it will not walk in a drag bag. Total elevation travel is 100 MOA, or 29 MIL, and windage is 80 MOA, or 23 MIL.
Elevation moves 10.5 MIL per revolution with a 30 MIL dial travel limit; windage moves 10 MIL per revolution. That half-MIL difference between the two axes is what the manufacturer publishes, and we are printing it rather than rounding it away.
Parallax is side focus with a 50 yard minimum. No BDC dial ships in the box, though the turret is listed as custom BDC dial compatible.
Glass and dimensions
Magnification runs 3.6x to 18x behind the 44 mm objective. Eye relief is 3.5 inches at the bottom and 3.8 at the top. Field of view is 28.3 feet at 3.6x and 5.8 feet at 18x, per 100 yards.
The scope weighs 26 ounces and measures 12.1 inches, with 5.9 inches of mounting space split 1.7 front and 2 rear, a 2.9 inch objective section and a 2.1 inch bell. That is compact for a Mark 5HD.
Honest notes on the Leupold Mark 5HD TMR 35mm
Worth knowing if you cross-shop: the same chassis is sold with an M1C3 MOA turret and a PR-1MOA reticle, and in Flat Dark Earth. The manufacturer publishes 26 ounces for this one and for the black M1C3 version, but 23 ounces for the FDE model, with every other figure identical. One of those weights is wrong; ours is the 26 ounce figure.
No finish colour as a specification, no coating list and no light transmission figure is published for this scope. Retail listings quote them anyway. We print what the manufacturer prints and nothing else.
At 26 ounces on a 35 mm tube, with rings to match, this is a precision rifle optic rather than something to carry all day. Build around it accordingly.
Who this scope suits
Precision rifle shooters working in MIL, anyone who wants a compact Mark 5HD rather than a 56 mm one, and shooters who prefer the TMR to a tree reticle. The Leupold Mark 5HD TMR 35mm is designed, machined and assembled in the USA and guaranteed to perform for life.
Skip it if you think in MOA, if you need illumination, or if 35 mm rings are not something you want to source.
