Description

The Leupold Mark 5HD PR1-MOA FDE is item 185066, a 3.6-18×44 first focal plane scope on a 35 mm tube in Flat Dark Earth. If you think in minutes of angle rather than milliradians, this is the Mark 5HD that speaks your language.

Why the Leupold Mark 5HD PR1-MOA FDE works in MOA

The reticle is marked in MOA and the M1C3 elevation turret clicks in 1/4 MOA. Reticle units and turret units match, which is the whole point. You read a correction off the glass and dial exactly that number without converting anything.

Being first focal plane, those MOA subtensions are true at every magnification. A 4 MOA hold is 4 MOA at 6x and at 18x. The trade is that the reticle looks fine at the bottom of the range, and this model is not illuminated.

There is no battery in the Leupold Mark 5HD PR1-MOA FDE at all. Nothing to fail in the cold, nothing to forget to switch on, and nothing to help you in the last ten minutes of shooting light.

Turrets, travel and parallax

Elevation is the M1C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is capped, which keeps it from walking in a drag bag. Total elevation travel is 100 MOA, or 29 MIL, at 25 MOA per revolution with a 71.5 MOA dial travel limit.

Windage gives 80 MOA, or 23 MIL, at 15 MOA per turn. Parallax is side focus with a 50 yard minimum. No BDC dial ships in the box, though the turret is listed as custom BDC dial compatible.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 3.6x to 18x behind a 44 mm objective. Eye relief is 3.5 inches at the bottom and 3.8 at the top. Field of view is 28.3 feet at 3.6x, narrowing to 5.8 feet at 18x, per 100 yards.

Overall length is 12.1 inches with 5.9 inches of mounting space, split 1.7 front and 2 rear. The objective section is 2.9 inches and the bell 2.1 inches across.

Two published figures we are not going to smooth over

First, the weight. Leupold publishes 23 ounces for this FDE model. The mechanically identical black version, item 176445, is published at 26 ounces, and item 173296 on the same chassis is also 26 ounces, with every other figure matching across all three. A Cerakote finish does not remove three ounces. One of those numbers is wrong and we cannot tell you which, so we are printing what the manufacturer prints and flagging it.

Second, the reticle name. The product title says PR1-MOA, the specification row says FFP PR-1MOA, and the reticle graphic file is named FFP_PR1-MOA. Three spellings of one reticle on one page. It is the same reticle; only the hyphen moves.

Honest notes on the Leupold Mark 5HD PR1-MOA FDE

The 35 mm main tube is the first thing to budget for. It is not 30 mm and not 34. Rings and one-piece mounts in 35 mm exist but are a narrower market, they cost more, and you will not borrow a set at the range. Price the mount alongside the scope.

Flat Dark Earth is a finish choice, not a performance one, and Leupold publishes no finish specification, coating list or light transmission figure for this model. Anything you see quoted on those points came from somewhere other than the manufacturer.

Who this scope suits

Precision shooters and hunters who work in MOA, anyone matching an FDE rifle, and shooters who want first focal plane holds without learning milliradians. The Leupold Mark 5HD PR1-MOA FDE carries the Leupold lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you shoot in MIL, if you need an illuminated reticle for low light, or if 35 mm rings are not in the budget.
