Description

The Leupold Mark 5HD M1C3 PR2-MOA in 3.6-18×44 is item 182944. It is one of two minute-of-angle scopes on a chassis that carries five, and the turret designation in that name is the thing that decides whether it suits you.

M1C3 means minutes, and that is the whole point

The M1C3 elevation turret clicks in 1/4 MOA and the PR2-MOA reticle is graduated in minutes. Reticle and dial agree, so a correction you read off the glass is the number you turn to without converting anything.

The three M5C3 scopes on this same chassis click in 0.1 MIL and carry mil reticles. They are not a preference away from this scope; they are a different measurement system, and mixing units is how people miss under time pressure.

Its stablemate in MOA is item 185066, which carries the lighter PR1-MOA pattern in Flat Dark Earth. The Leupold Mark 5HD M1C3 PR2-MOA gives you the denser PR2 grid instead.

This is the black one

Leupold publishes no finish specification row for any scope on this chassis; the colour lives inside the model name. Items 185066, 185067 and 185068 all end in FDE. This one does not, and neither does its product photograph filename.

That matters because at least one listing site has this UPC recorded as FDE. If you are cross-shopping and the colour is why you are buying, take the model name as the authority rather than a retailer database.

It is a first focal plane scope, so the PR2-MOA subtensions are true at every magnification. There is no illumination and no battery in it.

Turrets, travel and parallax

Elevation on the Leupold Mark 5HD M1C3 PR2-MOA is locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is capped, so it will not walk in a drag bag.

Total elevation travel is 100 MOA, or 29 MIL, at 25 MOA per revolution with a 71.5 MOA dial travel limit. Windage gives 80 MOA, or 23 MIL, at 15 MOA per turn. Parallax is published with a 50 yard minimum.

No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible, though the turret is published as custom BDC dial compatible.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 3.6x to 18x behind a 44 mm objective on a 35 mm main tube. Eye relief is 3.5 inches at the bottom and 3.8 at the top. Field of view is 28.3 feet at 3.6x and 5.8 feet at 18x, per 100 yards.

The scope weighs 26 ounces and measures 12.1 inches, with 5.9 inches of mounting space split 1.7 front and 2 rear, on a 2.9 inch objective section with a 2.1 inch bell. Compact, for a Mark 5HD.

Two things the manufacturer page does not say

This page carries no focal plane row at all, and no reticle type row. First focal plane is stated only inside the model name and the reticle designation FFP PR2-MOA. Its FDE sibling publishes both rows. The scope is first focal plane; the specification table simply does not say so.

It also carries no Precision Side Focus row and no adjustable parallax row, only the 50 yard minimum. Again, the sibling publishes side focus explicitly. We are telling you what is and is not published rather than asserting a row that does not exist.

Worth knowing on weight: this scope publishes 26 ounces, as do three of its four siblings. Only 185066 publishes 23, with every other figure matching and the same M1C3 turret as this one. Four siblings at 26 make that 23 almost certainly a manufacturer error.

Honest notes

The 35 mm main tube is the budget item nobody warns you about. It is not 30 mm and not 34. Rings and one-piece mounts exist in 35 mm but the market is narrower and the prices higher. Price the mount alongside the scope.

With no illumination, a PR2 grid at 3.6x in failing light takes some finding. That is the trade for having nothing to fail. No coating list or light transmission figure is published either, so we print neither.

Who this scope suits

Precision shooters who work in minutes and want a compact 35 mm scope, and anyone who prefers the PR2 grid to the lighter PR1 pattern. The Leupold Mark 5HD M1C3 PR2-MOA is designed, machined and assembled in the USA and guaranteed to perform for life.

Skip it if you dial in mils, if you need illumination, or if you wanted the Flat Dark Earth finish.
