Description

The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MOA is item 180291. It is one of three scopes this shop has listed as MARK 5HD 5-25X56, and the only thing separating it from one of the others is the reticle pattern.

PR2-MOA against the alternatives

Item 176448 is the same scope with the PR-1MOA reticle. Same M1C3 turret, same 1/4 MOA clicks, same 120 MOA of elevation, same 30 ounces, same 35 mm tube. Reticle pattern is the entire choice between those two.

Item 180222 is a different proposition: an M5C3 turret clicking in 0.1 MIL behind a PR2-MIL reticle. If you work in milliradians, that is the one you want and neither of the MOA scopes will serve.

The PR2 layout gives you a denser grid of holdover and wind references than the PR1. If you hold rather than dial under time pressure, the extra references earn their clutter. If you dial for everything, the simpler pattern is easier to shoot behind.

First focal plane, and no battery

The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MOA is a first focal plane scope, so the MOA subtensions are correct at every magnification. A 7 MOA hold is 7 MOA at 12x and at 25x. That is the whole argument for first focal plane glass.

It is not illuminated and there is no battery in it. Nothing to fail in the cold, and nothing to help you when a fine first focal plane reticle gets hard to see at the bottom of the zoom range in poor light.

Turrets, travel and parallax

Elevation is the M1C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is capped, so it stays put in a drag bag. Clicks are 1/4 MOA on both axes.

Total elevation is 120 MOA, which is 35 MIL or 349 cm at 100 metres, at 25 MOA per revolution with a 71.5 MOA dial travel limit. Windage gives 60 MOA, or 17 MIL, at 15 MOA per revolution.

That is double the elevation range you have in windage, so mount the scope level and centre the zero rather than burning windage travel on a base that is not square. Parallax is side focus with a 50 yard minimum.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 5x to 25x behind a 56 mm objective on a 35 mm tube. Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.8 at the top. Field of view is 20.4 feet at 5x and 4.2 feet at 25x, per 100 yards.

The scope weighs 30 ounces and measures 15.7 inches, with 6.2 inches of mounting space split evenly front and rear. The objective section is 6.2 inches long and the bell 2.5 inches across, so plan for tall rings and a receiver with room ahead of the turret housing.

Honest notes on the Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MOA

The 35 mm main tube is the budget item nobody warns you about. Rings and one-piece mounts in 35 mm exist but the market is narrower than for 30 or 34 mm, the prices are higher, and you will not borrow a set at the range. Price the mount alongside the scope.

Leupold publishes a custom BDC dial compatibility row for the PR-1MOA version of this scope and does not publish one for this item. That is an absent row rather than a stated no, so we are not going to tell you either way. Ask Leupold before you plan on ordering a dial.

No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published for this model. Retail listings print all three anyway. We print what the manufacturer prints.

Who this scope suits

Precision rifle competitors working in minutes, long-range hunters who want a full holdover grid, and anyone cross-shopping the two MOA versions who prefers the denser reticle. The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MOA is 100 percent waterproof and fogproof and guaranteed to perform for life.

Skip it if you dial in MIL, if you want illumination, or if the simpler PR-1MOA pattern suits how you actually shoot.
