Description
The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MIL is item 180222, and it is the odd one out in this shop’s Leupold rack. Everything else here is a second focal plane hunting scope. This is a first focal plane precision optic on a 35 mm tube, and it asks different things of you.
First focal plane: what the Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MIL changes
In a first focal plane scope the reticle grows and shrinks with the magnification. The consequence is the whole point: the PR2-MIL subtensions are correct at every power, not just one. A 1.5 MIL hold is 1.5 MIL at 8x and at 25x.
That is what you want if you range, hold and correct in milliradians under time pressure. It is also the reason the reticle looks very fine at 5x. In failing light at the bottom of the range, a first focal plane reticle can be genuinely hard to see, and this one is not illuminated.
There is no battery in the Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MIL at all. Nothing to fail in the cold, nothing to carry spares for, and nothing to switch on when the light goes. Decide which half of that sentence matters more to you.
Turrets and travel
Elevation is Leupold’s M5C3 dial: locking, with a revolution indicator so you always know which turn you are on. Windage is capped, which keeps it from moving in a case. Clicks are 0.1 MIL throughout.
Total elevation travel is 35 MIL, or 120 MOA, at 10.5 MIL per revolution with a 30 MIL dial travel limit. Windage is 17 MIL, or 60 MOA, at 10 MIL per turn. Note the asymmetry: you have roughly twice the elevation range you have windage.
Parallax is adjustable side focus with a 50 yard minimum. At 25x that dial is not a luxury.
Glass and dimensions
Magnification runs 5x to 25x behind a 56 mm objective. Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.8 at the top. Field of view is 20.4 feet at 5x, narrowing to 4.2 feet at 25x, per 100 yards.
The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MIL weighs 30 ounces and measures 15.7 inches. Leupold states it is 100% waterproof and fogproof.
Honest notes before you buy
The 35 mm main tube is the first thing to plan around. It is not 30 mm and it is not 34. Rings and one-piece mounts in 35 mm exist but are a smaller market, they cost more, and you will not borrow a set from a friend. Price the mount at the same time as the scope.
Thirty ounces is a lot of scope. On a precision rifle shot from a bipod that is irrelevant; on anything you carry, it is not. This optic belongs on a gun built for the job.
The 17 MIL of windage is worth a second look if you shoot in serious wind at distance, because it is the tighter of the two axes by a wide margin. Mount it with a level and get your zero centred rather than burning travel on a crooked base.
Leupold publishes no finish colour, no coating list and no light transmission percentage for this model. Those figures appear on retail listings regardless. We print what the manufacturer prints.
Who this scope suits
Precision rifle competitors, long-range hunters who work in MIL, and anyone who wants subtensions that stay true across the magnification range. The Leupold Mark 5HD 5-25×56 PR2-MIL is guaranteed to perform for life.
Skip it if you hunt in low light without illumination, if you cannot justify 35 mm rings, or if you think in MOA and would rather not retrain.
