Description

The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum TMR in 2.5-10×42 is item 183738. Two things make it the odd one out in the Mark 4HD line: it sits on a 30mm tube rather than 34, and its parallax is fixed rather than side focus.

What makes the Leupold Mark 4HD Illum TMR different

Every other Mark 4HD we stock is a 34 mm tube with side focus. This one is 30mm with parallax set parallax-free at 150 yards and no side dial at all. That keeps it light at 21.5 ounces and short at 12.5 inches.

The trade is real. Without a parallax dial you accept a small aiming error at very short range and at the top of the magnification, and you cannot tune focus for a 50 yard steel plate. For a scope that tops out at 10x, that is a defensible choice.

It also means 30mm rings, not 34. If you are moving this between rifles set up for other Mark 4HD scopes, the mounts will not carry over.

The TMR reticle and the illumination

The TMR is a milliradian reticle, and the M5C3 turret clicks in 0.1 MIL. Reticle and dials agree, so a correction read off the glass is dialled without converting anything.

This is a first focal plane scope, so the TMR subtensions are true at every magnification. A 1.2 MIL hold is 1.2 MIL at 4x and at 10x. Eight illumination settings run from a CR2032 through a push button, rated 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high.

One published oddity: the manufacturer marks this scope Daylight Bright Illumination No, while every other illuminated Mark 4HD in the range is marked Yes. We are printing that as published rather than assuming it is a typo, but treat the brightness ceiling as an open question if you shoot in full sun.

Turrets and travel

Elevation on the Leupold Mark 4HD Illum TMR is the M5C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is capped. Total travel is 24.7 MIL, or 85 MOA, in both axes, at 10 MIL per revolution with a 28.7 MIL dial travel limit.

Equal elevation and windage travel is unusual and useful: you are not rationing windage against a crooked base the way you are on the longer Mark 4HDs, where windage is half the elevation range.

No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible. The manufacturer publishes no custom BDC dial compatibility row for this item either, so ask before planning on a dial.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 2.5x to 10x behind a 42 mm objective. Field of view is 42.2 feet at 2.5x, narrowing to 11 feet at 10x, per 100 yards, which is a genuinely wide bottom end for a first focal plane scope.

Eye relief is 3.6 inches low and 3.9 high. The scope measures 12.5 inches with 6 inches of mounting space, split 1.7 front and 2 rear, on a short 3.3 inch objective section.

Honest notes

Leupold builds a near-identical second focal plane version of this scope, item 183737. It looks the same in a photograph. If you are cross-shopping from another retailer, confirm the item number rather than the picture, because first and second focal plane behave completely differently when you change magnification.

At 2.5x a first focal plane TMR is very fine. The illumination is what makes the bottom of the range usable in poor light, and that depends on a battery. The etched reticle stays usable with a dead cell, but the lit centre goes.

No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published for this model, so we print none of the three.

Who this scope suits

Shooters who want a first focal plane MIL scope that is genuinely light and short, designated marksman builds, and anyone working inside 600 yards who values a wide 2.5x bottom end. The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum TMR is waterproof, fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you need parallax adjustment, if you want more than 10x, or if your rifle is set up for 34 mm rings.
