Description

The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR2-MOA in 6-24×52 is item 188483, the illuminated minute-of-angle version of a scope we also stock unlit. Four Mark 4HD 6-24x52s share this body, and the differences are worth two minutes before you order.

Four 6-24×52 scopes: turret, reticle, illumination

All four share a 34mm tube, a 52 mm objective, first focal plane glass, side focus to 25 yards, 125 MOA of internal elevation and a 14.6 inch body. Three things separate them.

This one, item 188483, is the M1C3 turret clicking in 1/4 MOA with an illuminated PR2-MOA reticle. Item 183822 is the same scope unlit. Item 188484 is the illuminated M5C3 with a PR2-MIL reticle, and 183823 is that one unlit.

Pick the measurement system first. A MOA reticle with MOA turrets, which is what you have here, means the correction you read is the number you dial. Mixing units is the single most common way people lose a shot under time pressure.

The illumination

Eight brightness settings run from a CR2032 through a push button, rated 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high. The manufacturer rates the illumination daylight bright, and describes Motion Sensor Technology shutting it off after five minutes of stillness.

On a first focal plane scope this matters more than it sounds. At 6x a PR2-MOA grid is genuinely fine, and a lit centre is what keeps the bottom of the zoom range usable when the light goes.

The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR2-MOA publishes no night vision compatibility row, though the description discusses night vision use. An absent row is not a stated answer, so confirm with Leupold before planning around a clip-on.

Turrets, travel and parallax

Elevation is the M1C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is a zero-lock turret. Clicks are 1/4 MOA on both axes. Total elevation travel is 125 MOA, or 36 MIL, at 25 MOA per revolution with a 71.5 MOA dial travel limit.

Windage gives 65 MOA, or 18 MIL. The manufacturer publishes 25 MOA per revolution for windage on this item, where the other M1C3 scopes in the range publish 24 against the same 25 MOA elevation figure. We print it as published.

Precision side focus adjusts parallax down to a 25 yard minimum, which makes the scope usable for rimfire practice as well as centrefire work at distance.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 6x to 24x. Eye relief is 3.8 inches at the bottom and 4.0 at the top. Field of view is 17.3 feet at 6x and 4.7 feet at 24x, per 100 yards.

The scope weighs 27 ounces and measures 14.6 inches, with 6.3 inches of mounting space split 1.9 front and 2.1 rear, on a 5.1 inch objective section with a 2.4 inch bell.

Honest notes on the Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR2-MOA

A weight oddity worth knowing: Leupold publishes the illuminated 6-24×52 scopes at 27 ounces and the non-illuminated ones at 27.5. An illumination module and a CR2032 do not make a scope lighter. Both figures are as published and we are not going to pick one.

No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible, though the turret is listed as custom BDC dial compatible. If a yardage dial matters to you, ask Leupold rather than assuming.

At 27 ounces plus 34 mm rings this is a bipod-and-bag optic. No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published for it, so we print none of the three.

Who this scope suits

Shooters raised on minutes who want a lit reticle for first and last light, precision rifle competitors working in MOA, and anyone who found a fine first focal plane grid hard to pick up at 6x. The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR2-MOA is waterproof, fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you work in mils, if you would rather not carry a battery, or if the unlit version at the same specification saves you enough to matter.
