Description
The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR1-MOA in 4.5-18×52 is item 183623. The old store title got the reticle right and left out the part that decides whether you can use the scope: it is the M1C3 turret, which clicks in minutes of angle.
Four Mark 4HD 4.5-18x52s, and why the turret matters most
Four scopes share this body. Two click in mils and two in minutes. This one, item 183623, is M1C3 with 1/4 MOA clicks and an illuminated PR1-MOA reticle. Item 183625 is the same MOA turret with a PR2-MOA reticle and no illumination.
The other two are milliradian scopes: item 183624 with an illuminated PR1-MIL reticle, and item 183626 with a PR2-MIL and no illumination. Both use the M5C3 turret and 0.1 MIL clicks.
Buy the wrong measurement system and every correction becomes arithmetic under time pressure. Buy the wrong illumination and you find out at last light. The titles alone will not tell you, which is why this page does.
Illumination and reticle
Eight brightness settings run from a CR2032 through a push button, rated 1600 hours on low, 1000 on medium and 300 on high. The manufacturer rates the illumination daylight bright.
The PR1-MOA is the lighter of the two MOA patterns, with fewer references than the PR2. If you dial for elevation and only hold for wind, it gives you a cleaner picture. It is a first focal plane reticle, so its subtensions are true at every magnification.
One naming quirk to be aware of when cross-shopping: the manufacturer spells this reticle PR1-MOA in the product name and PR-1MOA in the specification table, on the same page. It is one reticle; only the hyphen moves.
Turrets, travel and parallax
Elevation on the Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR1-MOA is the M1C3: locking, with a revolution indicator. Windage is capped, which is worth noting because the two non-illuminated scopes in this family publish zero-lock windage instead. Both illuminated versions are capped.
Total elevation travel is 125 MOA, or 36 MIL, at 25 MOA per revolution with a 71.5 MOA dial travel limit. Windage gives 65 MOA, or 18 MIL, published at 24 MOA per revolution against the elevation figure of 25.
Precision side focus adjusts parallax down to a 25 yard minimum, close enough for rimfire practice as well as centrefire work at distance.
Glass and dimensions
Magnification runs 4.5x to 18x behind a 52 mm objective on a 34 mm main tube. Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.9 at the top. Field of view is 23.1 feet at 4.5x and 5.2 feet at 18x, per 100 yards.
The scope weighs 27 ounces and measures 14.6 inches, with 6.3 inches of mounting space split 1.9 front and 2.1 rear, on a 5.1 inch objective section with a 2.4 inch bell.
Honest notes
The manufacturer publishes no focal plane row for this item, and no rezero type row, though both appear on its siblings. First focal plane is stated in the model name and the reticle designation, and we are relying on that rather than on a specification row that does not exist.
Custom BDC dial compatibility is also not published for this item, where two of its siblings publish it. No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible. Ask Leupold before planning on a yardage dial.
No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published either. Retail listings quote all three. We print what the manufacturer prints and nothing else.
Who this scope suits
MOA shooters who want a lit reticle and a cleaner pattern than the PR2, and anyone building a precision rifle who does not want to retrain in mils. The Leupold Mark 4HD Illum PR1-MOA is waterproof, fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.
Skip it if you work in mils, if you would rather not carry a battery, or if you want the denser PR2 grid.
