Description

The Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR2-MIL is item 183970, the milliradian version of the highest-magnification scope in the Mark 4HD line. We also stock the same scope in MOA, and the two are not interchangeable.

Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR2-MIL or the MOA version

This one uses the M5C3 turret and clicks in 0.1 MIL behind a PR2-MIL reticle. Item 183969 uses the M1C3 turret, clicks in 1/4 MOA and carries a PR2-MOA reticle. Everything else about the two bodies is the same.

Pick the measurement system you already think in. A MIL reticle with MIL turrets means the correction you read off the glass is the number you dial, with no conversion and no arithmetic at the wrong moment.

It is a first focal plane scope, so the PR2-MIL subtensions are true at every magnification. At 8x the reticle is fine and at 32x it is substantial. There is no illumination and no battery in the Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR2-MIL.

Magnification bought at the cost of travel

This is the part worth reading twice. The scope publishes 70 MOA of total elevation and 45 MOA of windage. The mechanically smaller 6-24×52 in the same family publishes 125 MOA and 65 MOA.

So climbing the magnification ladder here costs you dial, not gains it. If you intend to shoot to the far edge of what the cartridge will do, plan on a canted base and centre your zero carefully, because 45 MOA of windage is not generous.

The manufacturer also publishes the elevation dial travel limit as the phrase Total Scope Travel rather than as a number, on both 8-32×56 scopes. Every other Mark 4HD gives a figure. Read it as the full 70 MOA being available rather than as a published limit.

Turrets and parallax

Elevation is the M5C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is a zero-lock turret. Both axes move 10 MIL per revolution.

Precision side focus adjusts parallax down to a 25 yard minimum. Worth noting: the manufacturer marks this scope Precision Side Focus Yes and marks its MOA twin No, while giving both the same side focus row and the same 25 yard minimum. We report that rather than resolve it.

No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible. Custom BDC dial compatibility is not published for this item either.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 8x to 32x behind a 56 mm objective on a 34 mm main tube. Field of view is 13.1 feet at 8x and 3.4 feet at 32x, per 100 yards, which is a narrow picture even at the bottom of the range.

Eye relief is published at 4.2 inches at low magnification and 3.9 at high. That runs backwards against every other scope in the range, which gains eye relief as you wind up. Mount the Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR2-MIL so that 3.9 inches is what you actually have at 32x.

The scope weighs 30 ounces and measures 15.6 inches, with 6.8 inches of mounting space split 2.5 inches front and 2.1 rear, on a 5.6 inch objective section with a 2.5 inch bell. Plan for tall rings.

Honest notes

This is a specialist optic. Between the limited elevation, the narrow field of view and the 30 ounce weight, it belongs on a bench, a bipod or an F-class line rather than on a general-purpose rifle.

With no illumination, a fine first focal plane reticle at 8x in poor light takes some finding. That is the trade for having nothing to fail and no battery to carry.

No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published for this model. Retail listings quote all three anyway. We print what the manufacturer prints and nothing else.

Who this scope suits

Benchrest and F-class shooters working in mils, varmint hunters who spend the day at magnification, and anyone who needs to see small impacts. The Leupold Mark 4HD 8-32×56 PR2-MIL is waterproof, fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you think in MOA, if you need elevation range more than magnification, or if you shoot anything that moves quickly.
