Description

The Leupold Mark 4HD 52mm PR2-MOA in 4.5-18×52 is item 183625. It shares a body with the 6-24×52 in the same family and differs where it counts for most shooters: it starts lower, at 4.5x, and gives you a wider field to find things in.

Why the Leupold Mark 4HD 52mm PR2-MOA starts at 4.5x

Field of view at the bottom of the range is 23.1 feet at 100 yards against 17.3 feet for the 6-24x. That is a third more picture at the moment you are trying to locate a target, and it is the practical argument for this scope over the higher-power one.

You give up the top end. This tops out at 18x rather than 24x, which matters for reading mirage and calling small impacts at distance but very little inside 600 yards.

The reticle is the PR2-MOA, graduated in minutes, matched to an M1C3 turret clicking in 1/4 MOA. Reticle units and turret units agree, so you dial the number you read.

First focal plane, and what that costs

The Leupold Mark 4HD 52mm PR2-MOA is a first focal plane scope. The subtensions scale with magnification, so a 6 MOA hold is 6 MOA at any power. That is the reason to buy first focal plane glass and there is no way to get it in a second focal plane scope.

The cost is a thin-looking reticle at 4.5x, and this model is not illuminated. There is no battery in it at all. In failing light at the bottom of the zoom range you may find the reticle harder to pick up than you expect.

Turrets, parallax and travel

Elevation is the M1C3: locking, with a revolution indicator and a set screw rezero. Windage is a zero-lock turret. Total elevation travel is 125 MOA, or 36 MIL, at 25 MOA per revolution with a 71.5 MOA dial travel limit.

Windage gives 65 MOA, or 18 MIL, published at 24 MOA per revolution. That 25-and-24 pairing on the same turret system is what the manufacturer prints, and we are printing it rather than rounding both to the same figure.

Parallax is adjustable side focus down to a 25 yard minimum, close enough for rimfire training as well as centrefire work at distance.

Glass and dimensions

Magnification runs 4.5x to 18x behind a 52 mm objective on a 34 mm main tube. Eye relief is 3.6 inches at the bottom and 3.9 at the top. Field of view is 23.1 feet at 4.5x and 5.2 feet at 18x, per 100 yards.

The scope weighs 27.5 ounces and measures 14.6 inches, with 6.3 inches of mounting space split 1.9 front and 2.1 rear, a 5.1 inch objective section and a 2.4 inch bell. Those are the same body figures the manufacturer publishes for the 6-24×52, which confirms the shared chassis.

Honest notes on the Leupold Mark 4HD 52mm PR2-MOA

This model is marked Precision Side Focus: No, while the M5C3 scope in the same family is marked Yes, even though both print the same side focus and the same 25 yard minimum. That may track the turret family deliberately or it may be a data entry artefact. We disclose it rather than pick an answer.

No BDC dial is included and the scope is not Custom Dial System compatible, so there is no yardage dial to order later. You dial in MOA or you hold off the reticle.

At 27.5 ounces plus 34 mm rings this weighs the same as the higher-power scope despite the smaller top end. It is a supported-position optic. No finish colour, coating list or light transmission figure is published for it, so we print none.

Who this scope suits

MOA shooters who want a usable low end, hunters who need to find a target before they refine on it, and anyone who values field of view over the last 6x of magnification. The Leupold Mark 4HD 52mm PR2-MOA is waterproof, fogproof and backed by the lifetime guarantee.

Skip it if you work in MIL, if you shoot far enough to want 24x, or if you need an illuminated reticle.
