The Do It All Duck Load

Many experienced waterfowlers consider #2 and #4 steel the sweet spot for ducks. #2 pellets carry enough energy for mallards and other big ducks at longer range, while #4 pellets fill gaps in the pattern for birds that commit to the decoys. Kent combines both sizes in one shell so you do not have to guess which birds will show up.

Speed matters with steel. At about 1,450 fps, this load keeps pellet energy high and reduces the lead needed on crossing shots. That helps on fast flying species such as teal and wood ducks as well as heavier mallards and pintails.

Kent’s plating process gives each steel pellet a smoother, more uniform surface. That improves flight consistency and pattern evenness, helping more pellets arrive on target at the same time for clean, ethical kills.

Field Notes and Duck Hunting Tips

Use Kent Fasteel Plus 12ga 3in 2 and 4 shells for mallards, gadwall, pintail, wigeon and other ducks over decoys or on pass shooting in the 25 to 45 yard range. They also handle the occasional goose that drops into the spread at close range.

Steel shot patterns tighter than lead, so an improved cylinder or light modified steel rated choke often works best over decoys. Pattern your gun at 30 and 40 yards to see how this load prints before opening day.

Confirm your shotgun is chambered for 3 inch shells, plug it for migratory birds, and follow federal and state rules on non toxic shot. Bring your federal duck stamp and state license on every hunt.

Wipe shells and boxes dry after a wet morning in the blind. Moisture can rust steel shot and swell paper or plastic components over time.

If you want one versatile 12 gauge steel load for most duck hunting situations, Kent Fasteel Plus 12ga 3in 2 and 4 shells are a powerful and proven choice. Pair them with motion decoys to bring wary birds into range.

Shot placement matters as much as shot size. Wait for ducks to commit, with feet down and wings cupped, before calling the shot. Birds that are slowing down over the decoys are easier to hit and give your pattern the best chance of placing multiple pellets in the head and vitals. Pass on birds at the edge of range and let them work the spread again.

Practice your swing on clays during the off season, using report pairs and crossing targets that mimic how ducks move. Steel loads behave a bit differently than lead, so spending a few rounds with steel on the clay field builds confidence before your first hunt.

Keep a few spare boxes in your blind bag. A good morning can go through shells quickly, and running out just as the birds start working is frustrating.
