Description

Thirty rounds of .22 Magnum in a pistol that weighs thirteen and a half ounces empty. The Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR is not quite like anything else on the rack, and the numbers are the reason.

The Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR is lighter than most .380 pocket pistols at thirteen point six ounces, and the magazine holds thirty. Kel-Tec manages it by building the frame and grip out of polymer and by using a cartridge that does not need a heavy gun to contain it. Two magazines come in the case.

Why a 22 Magnum pistol like the Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR makes sense

  • Recoil is negligible, so follow up shots are genuinely fast and new shooters are not flinching
  • Thirty rounds changes what a rimfire handgun is for
  • Ammunition costs a fraction of any centerfire pistol round
  • Thirteen ounces is light enough that it gets taken along rather than left behind
  • .22 Magnum carries considerably more energy than .22 Long Rifle out of the same length barrel

The Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR holds thirty rounds, not thirty three

This listing previously said 33 rounds. It holds 30, plus one in the chamber. Both Sports South and Zanders record the magazine as a thirty rounder and Kel-Tec named the pistol after the number. We have corrected it rather than leave a capacity claim on the page that the gun does not meet. Two magazines come in the box, which is unusual at any price and means sixty rounds before you are loading anything by hand.

Buy ammunition made for a handgun barrel, not a rifle one

This is the part that decides whether you like the Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR or not. Almost all .22 Magnum ammunition is loaded around rifle length barrels. Out of 4.3 inches a lot of that powder is still burning as the bullet leaves, which costs you velocity and buys you a very large muzzle flash instead. CCI Uppercut is built specifically for short barreled .22 Magnum handguns, and it is the load to try first in this pistol. For volume shooting, Winchester Super-X 40 grain and Armscor 40 grain JHP are the two we keep deepest, and CCI Maxi-Mag 46 grain segmented hollow point is the heavier option.

Magazines, rails and holsters for the Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR

Spare Kel-Tec PMR-30 thirty round magazines are in stock and worth stacking up, because a gun that empties this fast is a gun you want magazines for. The frame has a Picatinny rail under the barrel for a light or a laser, and the slide is drilled and tapped. DeSantis make a right hand holster cut for the PMR30.

Other Kel-Tec PMR-30 models we stock

The same pistol comes in tan and in a titanium and dark earth finish. For capacity restricted states Kel-Tec build a ten round version, and we stock that in black.

Worth knowing before you buy

  • Two thirty round magazines are supplied with the Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR.
  • Ambidextrous safety. Fixed sights. Drilled and tapped.
  • Cannot be sold under the Illinois PICA, and no direct shipping to Rhode Island or Washington.
  • Rimfire ammunition is less consistent than centerfire by nature. A .22 Magnum semi-automatic rewards trying a few loads and settling on the one your gun likes.
  • Kel-Tec publishes the specification on its own PMR-30 page, and .22 WMR is standardized by SAAMI.

Why the Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR earns its place

  • Thirty rounds in a pistol that weighs less than most pocket .380s
  • Two magazines in the box rather than one
  • Almost no recoil, which makes it one of the easiest pistols to teach on
  • Cheap to feed compared with any centerfire handgun
  • A rail under the barrel and a drilled and tapped slide, so it takes accessories

This suits the shooter who wants a lot of rounds and very little recoil: a trail gun, a plinker, a pest gun, and one of the better pistols to hand a nervous beginner. It also has a following among people who want capacity without weight. It is not a substitute for a centerfire defensive pistol, and rimfire ammunition is inherently less consistent than centerfire, so anyone considering the Kel-Tec PMR-30 22 WMR for a serious role should test whichever load they choose thoroughly first.
